Closer Watch

St. Louis - The Cardinals have been able to achieve victory more often than not of late, despite the recent struggles of closer Edward Mujica. Since August 21, a span in which the team strung together 12 wins in 19 games entering Wednesday's contest, he has yielded at least one run in four of seven outings. By tallying four saves in five chances during that run, his pitching line -- 7.50 ERA, 1.33 ERA, and 2:0 K:BB ratio in six frames -- belies the aforementioned achievement. No matter, due to a limited innings count, the bloated ERA does not impact fantasy lineups as much as failing to notch a save or an inability to strike out the opponent. Another aspect in Mujica's support: St. Louis' offensive firepower will more often than not provide just enough cushion for wobbles on the mound, with good fortune in high-leverage situations nonetheless a likely result.

Recommended Pickup

Jonathan Villar, SS, HOU - Since his arrival in the big leagues on August 22, Villar has been a near-everyday presence at shortstop for the Astros, slashing a more-than-acceptable .276/.348/.379 with 17 steals in 23 attempts. However, he has supplied hits in nine of the past 11 contests -- not included Wednesday -- batting .317 (13-for-41) with his first major league homer, four RBI, 10 runs, and five stolen bases. The production approaches Hanley Ramirez levels at the shortstop position, minus the power potential of course, and because Houston can boast one of the top offenses in the second half -- their 221 runs scored ranks 10th overall in MLB -- Villar does not appear close to slowing down as September drags on.
