This article is part of our DFS Baseball 101 series.
Last June, I wrote an article about how to use team batting stats in daily fantasy baseball. Given the positive response, I will be doing monthly reports this year.Team batting with regard to daily fantasy baseball is important for a couple reasons. It allows you to identify a lower-priced starting pitcher who has an optimal matchup based on handedness rankings, and also lets you know what teams to avoid with that starting pitcher based on the same information.
For each team, I have a recap of each category rank for vs. RHP, vs. LHP, Home/Away and April/May/June.
Angels
SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |
APRIL | 1 | 18 | 26 | 27 | 26 | 22 |
MAY | 2 | 15 | 27 | 7 | 9 | 8 |
JUNE | 1 | 28 | 21 | 23 | 18 | 19 |
SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |
HOME | 1 | 19 | 26 | 22 | 14 | 19 |
ROAD | 1 | 19 | 21 | 9 | 9 | 12 |
SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |
vs. LHP | 1 | 20 | 20 | 14 | 9 | 10 |
vs. RHP | 1 | 20 | 25 | 16 | 12 | 12 |
The Angels have not changed much this season. You do not want to target them because of their lowest strikeout rate in baseball.
Astros
SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |
APRIL | 30 | 7 | 6 | 12 | 12 | 11 |
MAY | 26 | 3 | 12 | 19 | 14 | 13 |
JUNE | 22 | 1 | 12 | 5 | 4 | 6 |

SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |
vs. LHP | 25 | 3 | 14 | 22 | 21 | 20 |
vs. RHP | 27 | 3 | 11 | 10 | 11 | 11 |
The Astros are starting to heat up, especially against right-handed pitching and on the road.
A's
SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |
APRIL | 6 | 29 | 18 | 25 | 21 | 23 |
MAY | 5 | 29 | 23 | 22 | 22 | 24 |
JUNE | 2 | 21 | 20 | 16 | 13 | 13 |

vs. LHP | 2 | 30 | 6 | 16 | 15 | 11 |
vs. RHP | 4 | 26 | 27 | 27 | 26 | 26 |
The A's are a much better team on the road against left-handed pitching. You can target them with right-handed pitching at home. Hitters like Danny Valencia, Khris Davis and Marcus Semien are great stacking options against lefties on the road.
Blue Jays
SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |
APRIL | 26 | 6 | 11 | 14 | 13 | 13 |
MAY | 16 | 13 | 8 | 16 | 13 | 11 |

vs. LHP | 8 | 5 | 12 | 10 | 12 | 6 |
vs. RHP | 19 | 2 | 3 | 8 | 8 | 8 |
This is the Jays offense we saw in 2015. They are firing on all cylinders and you do not want to use any starting pitching against them now.
Braves
SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |
APRIL | 21 | 16 | 30 | 30 | 30 | 29 |

vs. LHP | 13 | 28 | 30 | 29 | 29 | 29 |
vs. RHP | 11 | 14 | 30 | 30 | 30 | 30 |
The Braves are nearly last in all offensive categories and splits. You can target starting pitching against the Braves in any scenario. Take note, their K rate has gone down considerably over the last two months.
Brewers
SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |
APRIL | 29 | 2 | 17 | 22 | 24 | 20 |
MAY | 29 | 1 | 15 | 10 | 6 | 9 |

SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |
vs. LHP | 27 | 1 | 26 | 24 | 26 | 24 |
vs. RHP | 30 | 5 | 22 | 17 | 21 | 21 |
The Brewers have consistently been one of the highest strikeout teams in baseball all season. You can target your aces against them. They are better at home, so it's better to target them on the road.
Cardinals
SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |
APRIL | 16 | 9 | 2 | 3 | 2 | 3 |
MAY | 13 | 10 | 7 | 5 | 3 | 3 |
JUNE | 11 | 9 | 11 | 21 | 22 | 14 |
SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |

SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |
vs. LHP | 14 | 15 | 22 | 26 | 23 | 21 |
vs. RHP | 8 | 7 | 2 | 3 | 2 | 2 |
While not the juggernaut it was in April/May, this lineup is still potent on the road against right-handed pitching. The interesting play is left-handed pitching against Cardinals at home where they rank just 21st overall.
Cubs
SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |
APRIL | 5 | 1 | 7 | 4 | 6 | 2 |
MAY | 20 | 2 | 16 | 4 | 4 | 6 |

vs. LHP | 10 | 2 | 4 | 4 | 3 | 2 |
vs. RHP | 25 | 1 | 10 | 6 | 5 | 5 |
The Cubs rank in the top 8 in all splits, but take note, they really feast on bad pitching, and elite starting pitching has been able to shut them down.
Diamondbacks
SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |
APRIL | 12 | 23 | 3 | 8 | 4 | 7 |
MAY | 17 | 18 | 19 | 11 | 11 | 15 |

vs. LHP | 16 | 10 | 3 | 3 | 4 | 3 |
vs. RHP | 26 | 28 | 14 | 15 | 17 | 17 |
It's strange in that the Diamondbacks struggle at home in one of the best hitters' parks in baseball. They still destroy left-handed pitching, though – especially on the road.
Dodgers
SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |
APRIL | 14 | 10 | 27 | 18 | 14 | 17 |

vs. RHP | 14 | 8 | 18 | 21 | 16 | 16 |
Too many injuries to this lineup have made them average, though Justin Turner and Trayce Thompson are great tournament plays against left-handed pitching.
Giants
SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |
APRIL | 2 | 4 | 13 | 9 | 7 | 5 |

vs. LHP | 5 | 13 | 23 | 19 | 14 | 14 |
vs. RHP | 2 | 4 | 26 | 13 | 7 | 7 |
Even with all of the injuries, this team doesn't strike out often. I would only target pitchers against the Giants at home with low totals (seven or less).
Indians
SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |
APRIL | 25 | 21 | 16 | 16 | 23 | 25 |

Even without having Michael Brantley, the Indians offense has now put together two strong months and is on fire. Players like Lonnie Chisenhall, Rajai Davis, and Tyler Naquin have been the catalysts.
Mariners
SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |
APRIL | 10 | 5 | 8 | 13 | 15 | 9 |

The bottom fell out on the Mariners' lineup in June. While overall they still look strong, they have probably overachieved and are coming back to earth.
Marlins
SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |
APRIL | 13 | 17 | 19 | 10 | 10 | 12 |

vs. LHP | 21 | 22 | 24 | 20 | 20 | 27 |
vs. RHP | 6 | 22 | 28 | 12 | 13 | 13 |
The Marlins are a strange team in that they have five players hitting .300 or higher, but outside of Marcell Ozuna they don't do a lot of damage. They are a better hitting team on the road against right-handed pitching. You can target left-handed pitchers against them in Miami.
Mets
SPLIT | K% | BB% | ISO | wOBA | wRC+ | OVERALL |
APRIL | 20 | 11 | 4 | 7 | 9 | 8 |

Too many injuries have decimated the Mets' lineup to where you can target them with almost all starting pitching, especially at Citi Field.
Nationals

vs. RHP | 13 | 6 | 15 | 19 | 18 | 18 |
When it comes to the best offenses in baseball, the Nationals usually don't come to mind, but they are one of the deepest lineups especially with Wilson Ramos having a career year and Danny Espinosa coming alive in June. All of this has come without Bryce Harper for much of the last two months, too. Because they are predominantly right-handed, they struggled against righties but crush southpaws.

The play here is stacking Orioles against right-handed pitching in Camden Yards in tournaments, especially now with Jonathon Schoop hitting second in the lineup.
Padres

The Red Sox lineup hit the skids in June, but that will happen to most teams at some point. You will still want to avoid any starting pitchers against them. As far as stacking the Red Sox, I would stick to taking them at home against weak pitchers.

The Tigers, much like the Astros and Blue Jays, are starting to live up to their reputation. They are one of the hottest hitting teams in the league, and Justin Upton is starting to find his swing.

With Brian Dozier starting to hit along with Miguel Sano coming back, there is some value in the Twins' lineup especially against left-handed pitching.

The Yankees are always dangerous at home against right-handed pitching because of the short porch in Yankee Stadium. The best play against them would be left-handed pitching on the road.
OVERALL
• Teams that struggled in April and May really took off in June (Astros, Blue Jays, Orioles, Tigers).• The Indians and Nationals (potential World Series preview?) followed up a strong May with an even stronger June.
• The Mariners, Cardinals, Red Sox and Pirates fell off the most in June.
• The Braves, Reds, Phillies and Padres continue to be the offenses to attack.
• The Astros and Brewers are great targets against in tournaments because of how often they strike out (their strikeout rates are in the bottom five in most categories).
