Closer Watch
Rangers -- Joe Nathan and Mike Adams, the Rangers' closer and setup men respectively, were unavailable against the Athletics on Friday with both having pitched the previous three games. In this case, Tanner Scheppers stepped in the ninth inning with a two-run lead, but did not leave unmarked. Scheppers, the normal seventh inning man gave up a solo shot to Chris Carter, but was able to get the last out of the game and his first save of the season. This was a rare save for Scheppers, but he figures to be a low man on the pecking order for saves going forward.

Royals -- Jonathan Broxton had a shaky ninth inning Friday against the Twins, giving up two runs while still earning a save, as his team gave him a three-run lead entering the last frame. Those two runs did make a noticeable difference for the closer's ERA, as it rose by over half a point. That normally would be a cause for concern, but Broxton has only given up five earned runs in 29.2 innings so far in 2012. Friday's performance will just be judged as a small blip, for now, on what has been a terrific first season with the Royals for Broxton.

Recommended Pickup

Other Recent Recommendations:
Jeff Baker, UTIL, CHC -- It may be a stretch to make a recommendation on a guy that is in no guarantee to play, but who is Cubs manager Dale Sveum to keep out a guy that has a .400+ average and 1.000+ OPS against any pitcher? That guy happens to be the utility man extraordinaire Jeff Baker, who owns Houston's starter on Sunday, Wandy Rodriguez. Baker is eligible to play at 1B, 2B, and even possibly an OF spot in certain leagues, which makes him a valuable asset to hold onto if he happens to get regular playing time. For the mean time, if you are in a close weekly matchup, and Baker gets his due and is in the starting lineup against Rodriguez, why not pick him up in what one could call an offensive spot start?
