Closer Watch

Astros -- Jose Veras was removed from Thursday's game in the 10th inning after his right hand was struck by a comebacker, but early indications are that he didn't suffer anything more than a light bruise. Even so, it wouldn't be surprising if manager Bo Porter elected to keep Veras on the bench for a few days to let his hand heal. Jose Cisnero and Wesley Wright would seem to be the top candidates to close on a short-term basis if Veras is rested and a save opportunity becomes available.

Recommended Pickup

D.J. LeMahieu, 2B, COL -- Since taking over for the struggling Josh Rutledge at second base in mid-May, LeMahieu's contact skills have been on full display, as he's batted .295 and gotten on-base at a .348 clip to keep the Colorado offense humming. This respectable average wasn't particularly surprising, as LeMahieu batted .297 over 81 games for the Rockies last season, though with only trace amounts of power or speed. The lack of those attributes mostly made him a fantasy afterthought in 2012, but with new manager Walt Weiss imploring his players to be more aggressive on the basepaths this season, LeMahieu has been running significantly more, stealing 11 bases in 13 attempts. As a result, LeMahieu, who is also in prime run-scoring position for the Rockies in either the leadoff or two-hole most nights, has suddenly become a reliable three-category player at a position that has a limited pool of interesting fantasy options. His stellar play both offensively and defensively should continue to make him a fixture in one of the league's better lineups going forward.
