Closer Watch

Mets - Counting appearances in both ends of a doubleheader on May 25, Jenrry Mejia has taken the mound in six of nine contests, during which he locked down the save on four occasions. Despite the preponderance of outings on his ledger during that stretch, which includes extra baseball in three consecutive games Friday through Sunday, he has avoided pitching in three in a row, making him theoretically available for Monday's series finale at Philadelphia. His path to a succesful save Sunday included serving up a long ball in the 11th, though, opening the door for others in the overworked 'pen (20 innings total in the last three) to receive a late-inning chance. Scratch those (Scott Rice and Josh Edgin) that have worked three straight, and Mejia will be contending with the likes of free-pass maven Vic Black and Jeurys Familia in the ninth or beyond Monday.

Recommended Pickup

Trevor Plouffe, 3B, MIN - Already mentioned in this space on Apr. 21, Plouffe's slash line has since taken a nose dive -- .307/.415/.477 in April to .204/.256/.381 last month -- due to a swoon in the first half of May. However, he's nabbed hits in five consecutive tilts, and 13 of the past 18, en route to a .282 average (20-for-71), four long balls, 12 RBI, eight runs scored, and a 6:14 BB:K. His sweltering start to the season has seemingly normalized, but the resumption of power at the plate (he's clubbed a homer every 27.1 at-bats in his career) forecasts friendly skies for the remainder of the campaign. He'll attempt to keep up the pace Monday against right-hander Matt Garza, whose righty brethren have surrendered a .265/.349/.450 line to Plouffe in 2014.

Other Recent Recommendations:Michael Saunders, Oswaldo Arcia, Tommy Medica, Tommy La Stella
