Closer Watch
Pirates: GM Neal Huntington said that while the Pirates aren't disappointed with what they've seen from Jason Grilli since he returned from the DL on Tuesday, the team doesn't believe he's ready to resume closing yet. "His [velocity] is back, but his command is not quite where he wants it to be," Huntington noted. Manager Clint Hurdle said before Saturday's game that Grilli would need two or three more outings before returning to the closer's role, so there would seem to be a decent chance that he's re-inserted into the role during the season's final two weeks. Grill allowed an earned run on a hit and a walk in two-thirds of an inning Saturday against the Cardinals.

Josh Rutledge, 2B, COL -- After posting impressive numbers as a rookie in 2012 in which he showed both power and speed, Rutledge rose up draft boards in the spring with the idea that a full season batting near the top of the order for what looked to be a formidable Rockies lineup would make him one of the more productive fantasy options in the middle infield. Unfortunately, Rutledge's subpar defense at second base and inability to draw a walk ultimately prevented him from living up to those lofty expectations, and he was exiled to the minors in late-May. Rutledge was even worse offensively when he returned to the Rockies in June to cover shortstop for the injured Troy Tulowitzki, but it appears a hot finish at Triple-A has him dialed in at the plate. Since returning to the Rockies as a September call-up, Rutledge has garnered four starts in seven games, batting an impressive 6-for-14 with a home run, three RBI and two steals. Although it's a small sample size to be sure, Rutledge did prove as a rookie that when he's locked in, the hits can arrive in droves. D.J. LeMahieu has primarily manned second base for the Rockies since Rutledge's early-season demotion, but because he lacks the ability to hit for extra bases, Rutledge would seem to have the far greater upside of the two as someone who can provide power at a position that traditionally lacks it. With the Rockies out of the playoff race and looking to assess their options for 2014, Rutledge should continue to receive ample starts, especially while he's hitting.
