Closer Watch

Pirates - Two simulated games under Jason Grilli's belt, two sim outings to go Tuesday and Wednesday. Yes, Grilled Cheese is cooking, and if he emerges from the back-to-back sessions in satisfactory form, he's expected to be activated and take what's rightfully his, the closing job, from Mark Melancon. Consequently, Melancon may only be of value for a short time, except when Grilli's services are required on three consecutive days. Any tight situation that arises Tuesday or Wednesday, though, should be handled adequately by Melancon, who has succeeded in six of eight save chances during Grilli's recovery from a strained left oblique.

Recommended Pickup

Gordon Beckham, 2B, CWS - Starting the current campaign on the disabled list, Beckham was predictably silent at the plate in his initial five games but has been belting the ball in the meantime, slashing .313/.343/.500 with three homers, eight RBI, and nine runs scored in 64 May at-bats. On Monday, he's been gift-wrapped the Royals' Jason Vargas, who has allowed six long balls to right-handed batters in nine nods this season en route to a .421 slugging percentage against. Beckham, a righty, has himself welcomed southpaws, against whom he's recorded two of his three round-trippers, as well as nine hits across 21 at-bats in 2014. Although baseball is frought with volatility from game to game, the second baseman is seemingly as close to a sure thing that exists in Monday's meager slate of contests.
