After a limited output against Spain, Duarte subsequently improved when both Uruguay and Saudi Arabia competed against his team. The improvement can indicate why, in terms of Cape Verde's starting XI, he replaced Jamiro Monteiro against Argentina. Unfortunately for Duarte, playing against the World Cup's contenders resulted in much more defense than offense, his lone contribution barely a chance created. So after 67 minutes, he was replaced by the aforementioned Monteiro, who logged relatively equal minutes despite his demoted role.
