Good qualifying and good track position of P8 would go up in smoke for Lawson at the lights out. His Racing Bulls machine would stall off the line and he would drop several positions on the opening lap. Lawson would shore up P18 once he got going and then end up in a titanic scrap with Sergio Perez for position. A two-stop strategy would allow him to climb back up the order some, but a late overtake of Franco Colapinto would only yield a 13th-place finish in the Australian GP.
