Despite a good qualifying effort and P8 starting spot on the grid, Hadjar would have struggles at the Suzuka Circuit. The Red Bull youngster would deplete his battery early in the race and he would lose several positions as a result. He would drop to P11 by his lap 19 pit stop. The safety car a few laps later would stand his race strategy upside down. Hadjar would continue to struggle with energy recovery in the second half of the race and could only manage a P12 finish after losing a long battle with Nico Hulkenberg.
