2025 Fantasy Outlook
Johnston has gone from 41 to 65 to 71 points across his first three seasons in the NHL, and he hit a new career high in goals last year with 33. He’s still just 22 years old, so we probably haven’t seen his peak. It helps that he’s opened his career with a 246-game iron man streak, making his injury risk minimal. If there is a downside to his game, it’s the lack of physicality, which hurts his versatility in certain fantasy formats. He had 14 PIM and 45 hits in 2024-25 and probably won’t do any better in those categories this year. However, Johnston might continue to grow on the draw, after seeing his faceoff percentage climb from 43.3 to 50.2 to 51.2 across the last three years. In conclusion, there’s plenty to like here, and Johnston also has some upside. Read Past Outlooks
NHL's best power-play sniper
Johnston had a goal and an assist in Tuesday's 6-3 loss to Boston.
ANALYSIS
Johnston's goal came on the power play at 19:02 of the third period to pull the Stars to within 5-3, but it was too little, too late. The goal was Johnston's 41st of the season, which moves him into sole possession of the team lead in that category. He has 80 points (75 games) for the first time in his career and sits second behind Jason Robertson on the Stars' scoring list. Perhaps most impressively, Johnston sits at the top of the NHL in power-play goals. He has 25, and the next closest player (Pavel Dorofeyev) has 18.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
There was no sophomore slump in 2023-24 for Johnston, as the second-year center put up 32 goals, 33 assists and 216 shots on net over 82 regular-season contests. The 21-year-old also emerged as an all-situations player for the Stars, who had previously been known as a one-line team. Johnston's on a star path already, and he's shown excellent durability by not missing a game over his first two seasons. He could carry his own line, perhaps with fellow top prospect Logan Stankoven, though it's also possible the Stars consider Johnston as an option to fill the spot vacated by Joe Pavelski on the top line. Fantasy managers should expect Johnston's 65-point effort from last season to be his floor moving forward, with a 70-80-point effort being reasonable for 2024-25.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Extension likelier in summer
Johnston is more likely to sign an extension with the Stars over the summer than during the season, Darren Dreger of TSN reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnston is in the last year of his entry-level contract and has yet to miss a game for the Stars in his career. Entering Tuesday's action, he produced 21 goals and 55 points over 60 contests, a slight step up from his 65-point sophomore campaign. Johnston is due a big raise as a core piece of the Stars' lineup in all situations, so he'll likely absorb most of the gains they'd get from the rising cap for 2025-26.
