21-Year-Old DefensemanD

2024 Fantasy Outlook
Last season, Edvinsson saw action in 16 games for the Wings in which he notched one goal, one assist and 26 hits while averaging 18:15 of ice time. In total, the Swedish blueliner has played in 25 contests at the NHL level but could be in line for an expanded role heading into the upcoming campaign. In the minors, the 2021 sixth-overall pick garnered 30 points in 54 outings during the previous year, so he could offer some offensive upside. Still, Edvinsson won't be a Norris Trophy nominee during his career and figures to offer mid-range fantasy value at best. Read Past Outlooks

Picks up helper in return
DDetroit Red Wings
November 19, 2024
Edvinsson recorded an assist and two PIM over 23:14 of ice time in Monday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Sharks.
ANALYSIS
Edvinsson missed one game due to a lower-body injury but didn't look any worse for wear in his return. He set up Dylan Larkin's first-period tally. Edvinsson has done fairly well for a 21-year-old defenseman, earning two goals, five assists, 23 shots on net, 38 blocked shots and a plus-3 rating over 17 appearances. He continues to see top-four minutes at even strength, averaging 20:45 of ice time, but he's not a regular part of the power-play mix.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
One of the consensus top prospects in the league, Edvinsson spent the vast majority of his first season in North America with AHL Grand Rapids, finishing with five goals and 27 points in 2022-23. He also scored twice in a brief nine-game stint with the Wings. Still just 20 years of age, the former No. 6 overall selection (2021) has a real chance to skate alongside Moritz Seider on Detroit's top defensive pair at some point in the not too distant future. However, there's a real chance Edvinsson will start the upcoming season back in the minors instead of receiving minimal playing time at the NHL level. Fantasy managers should plan on seeing how Edvinsson's usage appears to be shaking out during training camp. If it looks like he'll be handed a substantial role at the NHL level, Edvinsson will have appeal in redraft formats this year.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Shaping up as game-time call
DDetroit Red Wings
March 24, 2023
Edvinsson is set to take warmups ahead of Saturday's game against the Flyers, at which point coach Derek Lalonde will decide whether he'll dress seven defensemen or start Edvinsson over Gustav Lindstrom, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Red Wings have a litany of injuries up front, which strengthens the case to have both Edvinsson and Lindstrom on the ice for the next contest, but nothing has been officially decided in that regard. Edvinsson -- who was Detroit's sixth overall pick in 2021 -- secured his first NHL goal in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Blues. He recently overcame a lower-body injury, so the Wings might not want to push him too much since the team won't be making the playoffs.
