Hutson signed with the Oilers out of college in the spring, making two NHL appearances to burn off the first year of his entry-level contract. He had 50 points in 38 games for Boston University in his junior year of NCAA play. Hutson's upside is lower than that of his brothers, Montreal's Lane Hutson and Washington's Cole Hutson, and being a forward makes the eldest Hutson's path to relevance that much harder in Edmonton. Hutson has surged late in the season with three goals and five assists over his last seven contests. He's been excellent as a rookie in the AHL this year, earning 29 goals, 28 assists, 181 shots on net and 78 PIM over 60 appearances. Hutson has seen a little NHL time, and his strong AHL play earned him a two-year contract extension back in January.

In his 38 games with the Terriers this year, the 23-year-old winger notched 23 goals and 27 assists. If he can bring some offensive upside to the Oilers, the Illinois native could offer decent depth scoring to close out the regular season. Per Mark Spector of Sportsnet, Hutson is not eligible for postseason games because he was not on the Oilers' reserve list prior to the trade deadline.
