Larsen split his time between the NHL and AHL last season, and may end up riding the same roller coaster this season. His biggest value to the team is as a veteran presence, but he does offer a little offensive upside … if he can stay out of the press box. That's easier said than done for the veteran of five seasons, but only 125 NHL games -- he seems to have a hard time sticking on NHL rosters.
Larsen was acquired from the Stars in the Shawn Horcoff trade. In his last 87 games for Dallas, he has five goals and 11 assists. He does have some offensive upside, but it seems the Oilers have a lot of these kinds of players on their roster. Maybe if they throw enough mud against the wall, something will stick. Larsen could be the guy to stick, but is unlikely to make much of a fantasy impact this year.
Larsen was called up from the minors early last season due to Alex Goligoski's hand injury and was a constant presence on Dallas' blueline for the remainder of the season (save for a few minor injuries). He showed surprisingly good play in his own zone and his offensive game should being to emerge as he matures. He's a decent bet to approach 25 points in a full season.
Larsen's first full season in North American was a success, as he chipped in some offense (4-17 in 54 games with Dallas' AHL team) and saw brief time in the NHL for the second straight year. The Stars will likely want him to play most of the season in the AHL, further refining his game and filling out physically, but there's a nice future ahead for the puck-moving blueliner.
Larsen picked up an assist in two games at the NHL level last year, but spent most of the season against older competition in the Sweedish Elite League. He gets high marks for his hockey sense, though it hasn't translated into big offensive totals from the blue line.
