Agrees to two-year deal
DColorado Avalanche
July 1, 2026
Juulsen signed a two-year, $2.2 million contract with the Avalanche on Wednesday, per Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.
ANALYSIS
Juulsen had a goal, 10 points, 15 PIM, 104 hits and 45 blocks in 52 regular-season appearances with the Flyers in 2025-26. The 29-year-old blueliner will probably begin the season as Colorado's seventh or eighth defenseman on the depth chart. While he could be a healthy scratch when everyone is available, Juulsen could slot into a third-pairing spot if the Avalanche blue line runs into injury issues.

Juulsen's 2024-25 campaign was cut short by sports hernia surgery he underwent late in the campaign. The defenseman failed to record a point in 35 appearances with the Canucks and went minus-12 with 101 hits and 60 blocked shots. Assuming he recovers from surgery well -- he was expected to be healthy around the start of July -- Juulsen will be in contention for bottom-pairing minutes after signing with the Flyers. He can bring plenty of physicality, but he's never exceeded seven points in a season, so don't count on the 28-year-old making many scoring contributions.
After having logged just 68 NHL games across his first six years in the league, the fact that Juulsen played in 54 regular-season contests for the Canucks last year should be considered a step in the right direction. Having said that, the 27-year-old British Columbia native managed just seven points in those contests and has never contributed a power-play point in his career. The offseason additions of Derek Forbort and Vincent Desharnais could negatively impact Juulsen's playing time, though he'll have a chance to compete for a depth spot in training camp.
Juulsen, a first-round pick (26th overall) in 2015, earned his first appearance on the Canadiens' Opening Night roster last season. The 22-year-old was placed on Montreal's second pairing, and quickly established himself as a physical force, averaging more than three thumps per game before suffering a facial fracture that limited him to 21 appearances and actually threatened his career for a time. Injuries have, unfortunately, been a major theme for Juulsen since being drafted. The 22-year-old was given a clean bill of health in April, but there's still a lot of uncertainty surrounding what can be expected of him this year. He was a regular member of the Habs' second penalty-killing unit last campaign, which suggests he's already earned the trust of coach Claude Julien, but fantasy owners would be wise to wait and see how he fares during the first few weeks of the season before deciding whether he's worth a waiver claim.
Juulsen missed the first six weeks of last season due to a fractured foot but eventually jumped to the NHL after 31 games with AHL Laval. Coach Claude Julien said the defenseman would have been called up sooner if not for the injury. The coach showed great confidence in the 20-year-old rookie, placing him on the second pair and giving him minutes on the penalty kill. Juulsen averaged just under 20 minutes per game and dished out 58 hits in 23 games. In a normal year, the Canadiens might give him low-wattage ice time on the third pair, but Shea Weber's knee injury means others will have to shoulder larger-than-expected loads for the first two months. It may also send the organization down the path of a rebuild, in which case, it would serve Montreal's long-term plans to have Juulsen featured in a top-four role.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Likely to return Wednesday
DVancouver Canucks
January 29, 2025
Juulsen, who has missed the last six games for an undisclosed reason, is likely to return for Wednesday's road game against Nashville, Dan Murphy of Sportsnet reports.
ANALYSIS
Juulsen has been dealing with an undisclosed injury for nearly two weeks, and he's spent the last week on injured reserve. However, his usage during Tuesday's practice session suggests that he'll be back in action against the Predators. Over 32 appearances for the Canucks this season, Juulsen has failed to record a point but has logged 89 hits, 57 blocked shots and 21 PIM while averaging 16:34 of ice time.
