2026 Fantasy Outlook
Cates strung together the most rounded year of his career, suiting up for all 82 regular-season games and posting 18 goals and 29 assists in a defensively trusted middle-six role for the Flyers. The 27-year-old added 102 hits, 51 blocked shots and a plus-26 rating, giving deeper-league managers a quietly useful multi-category line. The power-play work remains light at nine points with the man advantage, capping his upside. Cates is the kind of center coaches lean on against tough matchups, and Philadelphia's playoff return suggests his usage isn't going anywhere. Project another 40-to-45-point campaign with strong peripherals for 2026-27. He's a late-round flier in standard leagues and a more interesting target in formats that reward hits, blocks and plus-minus. Read Past Outlooks
Won't need surgery
Cates will not need to have a procedure for the foot injury he sustained during the 2026 playoffs, per Charlie O'Connor of PHLY Sports on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Cates told reporters during the Flyers' postseason press conference Tuesday that he probably would not have been able to return in the playoffs, even if the team had advanced past the second round. While he won't need surgery for his foot injury, O'Connor noted that Cates will be sidelined for around a month. As such, Cates should more than likely be ready for the start of the 2026-27 campaign, barring any setbacks.

Cates recorded 16 goals and 37 points across 78 outings with Philadelphia in 2024-25, which is a jump from 18 points in 59 appearances in 2023-24, but still a touch below his career high of 38 points in 82 games in 2022-23. Cates is 26 years old, so it’s hard to still think of him as a prospect with meaningful upside. Instead, it’s best to see him for what he is now: a middle-six forward. He’d have more appeal if there was a physical aspect to his game, but he’s never even reached 100 hits in a season -- his 87 last year was a personal best -- and he has just 30 career PIM over 235 appearances. He’s also not good on the draw with a 42.3 career faceoff winning percentage. Pass on him unless you have use for a 30-40 point forward with minimal versatility.
