Mario Ferraro

Mario Ferraro

27-Year-Old DefensemanD
San Jose Sharks
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Getting fully healthy this offseason after suffering a broken ankle in April will be the first priority for Ferraro, but he’s projected to be ready for training camp. He’s coming off a solid season in which he recorded five goals and 12 assists in 78 games while averaging 21:24 of ice time. The 26-year-old (27 on Sept. 17) also recorded 150 hits and 125 blocked shots last year. He drew a lot of tough assignments as the top defenseman on the rebuilding Sharks, which led to an ugly minus-25 rating. Regardless, the six-year veteran could be a sneaky good sleeper option as the quality of the team improves around him, which could unlock some more offense along with his strong hit and shot blocking numbers. Puts away goal in loss
DSan Jose Sharks
April 15, 2026
Ferraro scored a goal on three shots and went minus-3 in Wednesday's 5-2 loss to the Blackhawks.
ANALYSIS
The first-period tally was Ferraro's first point over nine games in April. He's added 17 hits, 15 blocked shots and a minus-2 rating this month. For the season, the shutdown defenseman has earned a career-high seven goals and 22 points over 81 appearances. He's added 93 shots on net, 134 hits, 147 blocked shots, 35 PIM and a minus-2 rating while seeing top-four minutes. Ferraro is one of four blueliners on the Sharks' roster set for unrestricted free agency in the summer, but his ability to do the hard work would likely make him a top target to be re-signed.

While Ferraro was able to surpass the 20-point threshold for the first time in his five-year NHL career, fantasy managers probably shouldn't be banking heavily on his offensive upside. The 25-year-old blueliner doesn't have a role with the man advantage and didn't produce at a high level even in college or junior hockey. Still, in certain formats that utilize hits and blocked shots, the Toronto native might have some value considering he racked up 124 and 195, respectively, last season. Perhaps an improved squad around him can increase Ferraro's disastrous plus-minus rating (minus-38 last year) but otherwise, it won't have a significant impact on his 2024-25 campaign.
Ferraro has been a regular for the Sharks for the past four seasons, playing a physical, stay-at-home style while offering next to nothing offensively (nine goals, 53 points in 252 career games). Ferraro has posted at least 129 hits in each season and has finished with no fewer than 145 blocks over the past two years, but he's also been a minus player in each of his four seasons in the NHL, meaning you should be looking elsewhere for late-round production on draft day.
Ferraro has quietly become a key contributor for the Sharks, playing a ton of minutes (exactly 23:00 per game last season) and throwing the body around consistently. The 24-year-old has never been much of a scorer -- his career high in points is 17 -- but Ferraro added 140 hits and 151 blocks in just 63 games in 2021-22, numbers that are more than plentiful enough to give him late-round value in fantasy leagues which reward such statistics.
Few players in the NHL saw their responsibilities increase a season ago as much as Ferraro. He averaged a whopping 22:26 of ice time per game, after averaging just 15:53 per night a during the previous campaign. Ferraro -- a UMass-Amherst product -- managed just one goal and 17 points in 56 games, along with a minus-six rating, although the latter number is actually quite impressive given the lack of talent on the San Jose roster at the moment. Ferraro should push for 200 hits and 150 blocks over the course of a full year, but that's pretty much the only positive here from a fantasy perspective.
Ferraro earned an everyday role with the Sharks in 2019-20, posting 11 points, 120 hits and 63 shots on goal in 61 outings. By the latter part of the season, he was consistently seeing 20 minutes per game. The second-round pick from 2017 will likely be a leading blueliner for the Sharks' rebuild, and he may even unseat Marc-Edouard Vlasic for a top-four job in 2020-21. Ferraro still needs to clean up his defense a bit, and his physical playing style could lead to injuries for 5-foot-11 blueliner, but he may be worth a look in deep formats as a depth option. Just don't count on him to improve his plus-minus rating much from the minus-15 mark he carried last year.
Ferraro has been beaming with confidence since the Sharks called his name in the second round (49th overall) of the 2017 NHL draft. Regarded as a supremely athletic defenseman, he posted 14 points (two goals, 12 assists) to go with a plus-6 rating through 41 games for UMass-Amherst last season, and Ferraro upped the ante on his career honors by claiming alternate captain responsibilities before making his way onto the 2018 Hockey All-Rookie team. Keep the 5-foot-11, 179-pound skater in mind for the future knowing the ink is still drying on his three-year, entry-level contract.

Ferraro is likely to test the unrestricted free agent market this summer, per Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Ferraro had seven goals, 23 points, 35 PIM, 137 hits and 150 blocks in 82 regular-season appearances with San Jose in 2025-26. The Sharks have some interest in bringing him back, but it seems any potential deal will come after Ferraro has had an opportunity to examine his alternatives. The 27-year-old defenseman has completed his four-year, $13 million contract.
