Leo Carlsson

Leo Carlsson

21-Year-Old CenterC
Anaheim Ducks
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Carlsson showed some improvement offensively in his sophomore season, jumping from 12 goals and 29 points across 55 appearances with Anaheim in 2023-24 to 20 goals and 45 points in 76 outings last campaign. Although that’s not a big increase in terms of points per game, the jump did come despite his average ice time dipping to 16:14 in 2024-25 from 18:07 a year prior, so he showed a significant boost year-over-year in points per 60 minutes. It’s still less production than you’d want from the 2023 second-overall pick, but he didn’t have much to work with in Anaheim. No Ducks player reached the 25-goal or 60-point mark last season, but the silver lining is that the franchise has assembled a promising young forward group, including Carlsson, so there’s a fair chance they’ll grow together and combine for meaningfully better production this season. Forces overtime Sunday
CAnaheim Ducks
April 12, 2026
Carlsson scored a goal on three shots in Sunday's 4-3 overtime loss to the Canucks.
ANALYSIS
Carlsson's tally at 6:56 of the third period tied the game at 3-3 and forced overtime. The 21-year-old center has five goals over his last seven outings, but he hasn't chipped in an assist in that span. For the season, he's impressed with 29 goals, 66 points, 180 shots on net and a plus-3 rating over 68 appearances. His offense won't keep growing by big chunks year over year, but Carlsson is still young enough to find another level or two before his prime years.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Taking a cautious approach wasn't enough to keep Carlsson healthy in 2023-24, but the Ducks still got a good glimpse of what the No. 2 pick from 2023 can do. He put up 29 points, including nine on the power play, in 55 contests despite missing time due to a knee injury and a concussion. The sky's the limit for the playmaking Swede, but on a roster that's still a bit green like Anaheim's, it may take him a couple more years to make the leap to superstardom. One thing's clear -- the training wheels are off heading into 2024-25. Carlsson could push for 20 goals and 50 points while averaging around two shots per game and seeing plenty of power-play usage. Upside alone makes him a worthy mid-to-late-round pick in most fantasy formats.
Carlsson was selected second overall in this summer's draft, a move viewed as mildly surprising with Adam Fantilli still on the board. Given the top-end talent in the class of 2023, it's likely the Ducks still got a very good player in Carlsson, who promptly signed his entry-level deal in mid-July. The Swede posted 25 points in 44 games for Orebro in the SHL last year -- a notable feat for a teenager playing against men. Fantasy managers in redraft leagues will want to wait and see -- the Ducks are still projected to be bad in 2023-24, and Carlsson's production could suffer because of it. Those in dynasty and keeper formats will want to add him to their rookie squads ASAP, as he should be able to help within a couple of years even if he doesn't begin 2023-24 in the NHL.

Carlsson is not expected to return from his thigh injury in time for the 2026 Winter Olympics, Michael Russo of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Carlsson is expected to be ruled out for the Olympic tournament alongside Jonas Brodin, who is dealing with a lower-body problem, adding to a growing list of potential absentees for Team Sweden. According to Russo, Marcus Johansson, Mikael Backlund and William Eklund are all strong candidates to replace Carlsson on the Olympic roster.
