Kiefer Sherwood

Kiefer Sherwood

29-Year-Old Left WingLW
Vancouver Canucks
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Sherwood logged a career-high 68 regular-season games with Nashville in 2023-24, which resulted in him collecting 10 goals and 27 points. That's not bad production for a player averaging 12:10 of ice time, but his real value is tied to his physical play. The 29-year-old dished out 234 hits last year, and he'll likely end up with a similar total if his new team, the Canucks, deploy him regularly. While nothing is guaranteed, the two-year, $3 million contract Vancouver signed him to suggests that they're looking for him to be a mainstay on at least the fourth line. Just keep in mind that for all his hits, Sherwood isn't a major source of PIM, collecting a moderate 41 last season. Read Past Outlooks

Tallies in Monday's win
LWVancouver Canucks
December 23, 2024
Sherwood scored a goal on two shots, added two hits and blocked two shots in Monday's 4-3 win over the Sharks.
ANALYSIS
For the first time this season, Sherwood was held to fewer than three hits. He was listed on the fourth line and saw 12:58 of ice time. In December, the winger has six goals, one assist and 60 hits over 12 contests as he continues to be a solid source of depth scoring. He's now at 12 goals, 19 points, 68 shots on net, 200 hits and a plus-9 rating through 34 outings overall.

Sherwood was surprisingly useful for the Predators in limited stints last season, racking up 13 points, 57 shots on goal, 103 hits and 30 PIM over 32 games. His solid play earned him a one-year contract to remain in Nashville, though it's unlikely he sees much more than a middle-six role. He's never played more than 50 NHL games in a season, and at age 28, he can easily be scratched without a concern for his development if his play is subpar to begin the campaign. The Predators have a number of prospects seemingly ready to make the jump, so Sherwood's hold on an NHL job can be considered tenuous at best.
Sherwood signed a one-year contract with the Avalanche this offseason despite registering just one assist in 10 games with the Ducks last year. He added 23 points in 37 games with AHL San Diego, but his scoring touch has yet to translate to the NHL level. A deep forward group in Colorado makes it likely that Sherwood spends most of 2020-21 either in the minors or on the taxi squad -- 60 games of NHL experience could make the latter the preferable scenario. There's no reason for fantasy managers to keep track of the 25-year-old's progress this season, as he won't make much, if any of an impact with the big club.
Sherwood carved out a bottom-six role with the Ducks in 2018-19, contributing six goals and 12 points in 50 contests. The 24-year-old also added 18 points in 29 games with AHL San Diego. Sherwood may be able to claim a roster spot to start the season, but there are younger options with better pedigrees behind him -- he was an undrafted free agent signing out of Miami University (Ohio) -- so he's likely to be passed over at some point. Expect the American winger to notch 10-to-15 points with the big club this year, while once again splitting time between the AHL and NHL.
Sherwood won a roster spot with the Ducks out of training camp, though it took a litany of preseason injuries to Anaheim's forward corps in order for the Miami of Ohio product to ascend to hockey's highest level. Last season, Sherwood produced 30 points (nine goals, 21 assists) in 36 games for the RedHawks, and he potted two goals over 11 games for AHL San Diego. He has defied the odds as an undrafted winger, but the American skater probably won't see enough time at the top level to warrant fantasy consideration.

Could re-sign with Preds
LWNashville Predators
May 20, 2024
Sherwood is a strong candidate to re-sign with Nashville this offseason, per Alex Daugherty of The Tennessean on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Sherwood is coming off a career year in which he set new personal bests with 68 games played, 10 goals and 17 assists. With that in mind, the winger will likely be expecting to see a significant raise from his $775,000 cap hit this past season. A contract similar to the two-year ones that linemates Michael McCarron and Cole Smith signed should be enough to get Sherwood under contract, likely around a $1 million AAV.
