Past Fantasy Outlooks
Rutta was dealt to the Sharks this offseason after playing just one season of his three-year deal in Pittsburgh. He never found much of a groove during the 2022-23 campaign; he scored three goals and nine points in 56 games. Rutta laid out 71 hits while blocking 70 shots and tallying 30 PIM. The 33-year-old blueliner has eclipsed the 15-point mark just twice in his career and his only 20-point performance was as a rookie in 2017-18. He also hasn't scored a single power-play point since his rookie year. Rutta should see a similar bottom-four role in San Jose this year with very limited offensive upside.
Rutta recently completed a three-plus year run with the Lightning, winning a pair of Stanley Cup titles and losing in the finals to Colorado this past season. A stay-at-home defender who brings little offense to the table, Rutta's three goals and 18 points in 76 games last season were his most since his rookie year of 2017-18 with Chicago. Set for unrestricted free agency this past summer, Rutta signed a three-year, $8.25 million deal with the Penguins. He'll fill a similar role to what we saw with Tampa Bay, meaning he won't help you in fantasy circles.
Rutta will play an important on-ice depth role for the Lightning in 2021-22, but he won't deliver fantasy-relevant numbers in any category. Last season, he failed to register a goal and delivered just eight helpers in 35 games. Rutta and his teammates are looking for a three-peat with Lord Stanley, but that won't help you earn a fantasy title. Keep him on the wire.
Rutta played a part-time role for the Lightning in 2019-20, amassing seven points and a plus-6 rating in 33 games during the regular season. He got into five playoff games as well, earning one assist for the eventual Stanley Cup Champions. Heading into 2020-21, Rutta will compete with Andreas Borgman for a job on the Lightning's third pairing. It's not likely to be a fruitful role even if Rutta gets the better half of the timeshare, so he's unlikely to exceed 15 points. Fantasy managers can avoid him with ease, as the Czech blueliner's non-scoring numbers don't jump off the page, either.
Rutta was pretty good when healthy last campaign, picking up six goals and 20 points while averaging 19:15 of ice time in 57 appearances with Chicago. The 28-year-old blueliner appears poised to slot into a middle-pairing role with the Blackhawks in 2018-19, and if he's able to stay healthy, he could hit the 35-point mark, making him worth a look as a bench option in deeper formats. There's definitely a cap on Rutta's upside, but he'll warrant consideration as a late-round selection in drafts this season.
