Jack Hughes

Jack Hughes

24-Year-Old CenterC
New Jersey Devils
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Hughes provided 27 goals and 70 points across 62 regular-season appearances in 2024-25, making it his fourth straight campaign with over 25 goals and the third consecutive time he's hit the 70-point mark. Still, Hughes' full potential has been held back due to injuries. For the second straight season, he finished the year on the shelf, this time because of a shoulder injury that required surgery. The good news is Hughes should still be fine for the start of training camp, but given that the 24-year-old has reached the 70-game mark just once over his first six seasons, counting on him to stay healthy is a risky bet. Under ideal circumstances, Hughes has a chance to flirt with the 40-goal and 100-point marks, but it's safer to pencil him in for 70-80 points. Read Past Outlooks

Hughes scored two goals, recorded three assists and fired five shots on net in Thursday's 7-3 win over Washington.
ANALYSIS
Hughes stole the show in Thursday's victory, as he tallied two consecutive goals midway through the contest, including the game-winning tally. He also picked up a helper late in the first period and two assists in the third. Overall, the 24-year-old star is up to 24 goals, 44 assists, 200 shots on net and 23 blocked shots through 54 games this season. Hughes has been unstoppable since the Olympics with 32 points over his last 18 games, which ranks second in the NHL during that span. He's on pace to post the second-best points-per-game total of his career behind his 99-point campaign across 78 regular-season games during the 2022-23 season. When healthy, Hughes is a superstar for fantasy hockey.

Hughes amassed 27 goals and 74 points in 62 appearances during the 2023-24 campaign. He compiled five goals and 15 assists in nine outings before injuries began to hinder him. Ultimately, Hughes missed the final four contests of the season to undergo shoulder surgery. He is expected to be fully recovered in time for training camp. Hughes remained productive despite missing chunks of the year. He posted a career-high 4.42 shots per game and led the Devils with 31 power-play points. Hughes was one point away from 100 in 2022-23, and he should surpass that mark easily this campaign if he can stay healthy.
One of the top young stars in the game, Hughes finally showed the elite offensive ceiling that made him the top pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. He set new career highs with 43 goals and 99 points, crushing his previous highs of 26 and 56, respectively. Of those 99 points, 31 came with the man advantage while he finished fifth in the NHL with 336 shots on goal. Hughes doesn't contribute in many other categories though, as he totaled just 12 hits, 30 blocked shots and six PIM last year. The 22-year-old should have no issue repeating his successful 2022-23 campaign; Hughes will maintain his role as the Devils' top-line center and top power-play option.
Those hoping for a breakout from Hughes in 2021-22 got their wish, although multiple injuries limited him to just 49 games. That's the bad news. The good news is that Hughes was dominant when healthy, averaging over a point-per-game (26 goals, 56 points), in addition to adding 14 points with the man advantage. The upside here is ridiculous when you take into account Hughes will play the entire 2022-23 campaign at age 21. This may very well be the last year you can get Hughes at anything approaching a "discount" in fantasy drafts.
Hughes made legitimate progress in his second NHL campaign. His scoring numbers (11 goals, 31 points in 56 games) increased considerably and his plus-minus rating improved from a minus-26 in 2019-20 to just a minus-3 this past season. The fact Hughes didn't miss a game all year is also a positive sign. It can be difficult at times to get excited about anyone on the Devils from a fantasy perspective, but Hughes is the unquestioned No. 1 center for a club which signed the best free agent on the market in Dougie Hamilton and projects to be a considerably better team in 2021-22. This may very well be the final year fantasy owners can get Hughes at a potential discount on draft day.
Hughes struggled as an 18-year-old rookie last season, finishing the campaign with seven goals, 14 assists, nine power-play points and an ugly minus-26 rating in 61 games. Part of his poor performance can be attributed to the fact he was playing for a bottom-six Devils team that fired its head coach and general manager mid-season, but he also looked outmatched physically at times, which isn't exactly surprising considering he was a teenager playing against full-grown men. With an elongated offseason of training under his belt, the number one pick from last year's draft should perform far better in year two, although his upside will be capped by the fact he'll be playing for a New Jersey squad that will likely only be marginally better in 2020-21. Nonetheless, virtual managers shouldn't hesitate to snag Hughes with a late-round pick in this year's fantasy drafts due to his breakout potential alone.
Hughes was billed as the top prospect in the 2019 draft for a while, so it was no surprise to see him drafted first overall by the Devils. He needs to fill out a bit at 5-foot-10 and 170 pounds, but defenders can't hit what they can't catch, and Hughes' combination of skating ability, puck skills and vision often allows him to easily get by defensemen. Hughes has often drawn comparisons to star Blackhawks winger Patrick Kane, and Kane-like production could well represent his realistic ceiling after some development. The 18-year-old will likely need some time to adjust to the NHL, but Hughes should make a difference right away, especially if he can beat out Nico Hischier for the first-line center job alongside Taylor Hall.
