2025 Fantasy Outlook
Two years later, it’s fair to say the trade of Erik Karlsson from San Jose to Pittsburgh hasn’t played out as hoped, though that’s not entirely on the defenseman. He hasn’t recorded anything close to his 101-point showing from 2022-23 with the Sharks, but that was the first time he had even reached the 60-point mark since 2017-18, so a failure to repeat that magic isn’t shocking. Instead, he’s generated a strong 56 and 53 points, respectively, over the past two campaigns. The 35-year-old has also managed to stay healthy for three straight seasons in contrast to his injury-riddled past. The only issue is that adding Karlsson didn’t prove to be enough to push Pittsburgh back into the playoffs, and a postseason berth remains unlikely looking ahead to 2025-26, even if Karlsson is a fair bet to once again record over 45 points and 175 shots. Records three points in loss
Karlsson scored a goal and supplied two assists in Saturday's 6-3 loss to the Stars.
ANALYSIS
Karlsson played a hand in all three goals scored by Pittsburgh in Saturday's contest, including his own goal to give the team a 2-1 lead early in the second period. With the trio of points, the 35-year-old blueliner is up to 13 goals, 47 assists, 161 shots on net and 58 blocks across 68 games this season. While he's taken a small step back defensively this season, the veteran defenseman is enjoying his best offensive season in Pittsburgh across his three years with the team. Karlsson has flipped the switch offensively since the Olympics with 25 points over his last 16 games, which leads all defensemen in that span by five points. He's on pace to reach 65 regular-season points for the seventh time in his 17-year career, giving him excellent fantasy value for the remainder of the campaign.

Few were expecting Karlsson to repeat his Norris Trophy numbers, having racked up 101 points during the 2022-23 campaign, but the drop off to 56 points in 82 games was likely more than general manager Kyle Dubas was hoping for when he traded for the Swedish defenseman prior to last season. Like several of his future-Hall-of-Fame teammates, the offensively-gifted blueliner was undone in part due to a woeful power play that was the third-worst in the NHL at a paltry 15.3 percent conversion rate. Karlsson managed a mere 17 points in with man advantage. Getting the most out of Karlsson will be the task of whoever replaces Todd Reirden in running the power play in Pittsburgh, but fantasy managers can likely expect the blueliner to land between 60 and 70 points.
