Dawson Mercer

Dawson Mercer

22-Year-Old CenterC
New Jersey Devils
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Mercer was only able to avoid the sophomore slump for so long, instead enduring a drop in productivity in year three. This past year, the 22-year-old was able to reach the 20-goal threshold but recorded the lowest point total (33) of his three-year NHL career. Despite the rough 2023-24 campaign, Mercer should offer plenty of fantasy upside, due in part to the fact that he has yet to miss a regular-season game, logging all 246 games in the NHL. With a bounce-back year, Mercer should be capable of pushing for the 30-goal and 60-point thresholds - especially if he can manage more power-play ice time after averaging just 1:27 per contest with the man advantage last year. Snags three-year deal
CNew Jersey Devils
September 20, 2024
Mercer agreed to terms on a three-year, $12 million contract with New Jersey on Friday, Darren Dreger of TSN reports.
ANALYSIS
Mercer is coming off back-to-back 20 goals seasons but also posted the lowest point total (33) of his three-year NHL career, which likely played a role in this deal taking so long to finalize. With the 22-year-old now under contract, he should get onto the ice with his teammates soon -- though he may not suit up in Sunday's preseason opener against the Islanders. Still, Mercer figures to be in the mix for both a top-six and power-play role this year and could challenge for the 30-goal threshold.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2020
Mercer has dressed in all 164 regular season games for New Jersey since debuting in the 2021-22 season. After a 42-point rookie campaign, he tallied 27 goals and 56 points last year. He also improved his rating from minus-25 to plus-22 and fired 161 shots on goal. The 21-year-old has earned a top-six role with New Jersey and will likely skate on the second line next to Nico Hischier. Mercer registered 10 power-play points during the 2022-23 campaign and will have a spot on the team's second unit again this year. If he gets a full season playing alongside Hischier and Timo Meier, Mercer should post his first 60-point performance.
Mercer went above and beyond even the most optimistic expectations in his first NHL campaign. Playing nearly the entirety of the year at age 20, Mercer appeared in all 82 regular-season games for the Devils, posting 17 goals and 42 points. He averaged 16:32 of ice time per contest, including 1:53 per game with the man advantage. The biggest criticism regarding Mercer as a prospect was his apparent lack of foot speed, but he had no issues with the pace of the game in his freshman season. Mercer may struggle to offer redraft fantasy value in 2022-23, but he remains a fine keeper/dynasty league stash.
Signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Devils in December of 2020.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Might sign in near future
CNew Jersey Devils
September 18, 2024
Although Mercer, who is a restricted free agent, didn't sign before the start of training camp, both sides are continuing to talk and hope to reach an agreement on a new contract soon, according to Mike Morreale of NHL.com on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Mercer had 20 goals and 33 points in 82 contests last season, which was a significant decline from his 56-point showing in 2022-23. That drop in production is likely what's making it so difficult for the two sides to agree on what's fair value for the 22-year-old. Perhaps Mercer will ultimately sign a short-term contract to give him more time to establish himself.
