Alex Newhook

Newhook couldn't take a step forward in 2022-23, and he actually slipped a bit with 30 points in 82 contests with the Avalanche. Despite the plethora of injuries in Colorado, Newhook failed to secure a top-six role, averaging just 13:57 of ice time per game. A trade to Montreal represents another hit to the 22-year-old's outlook, though he may make up for the weaker supporting cast by playing a larger role with his new team. He should slot into a middle-six role with the Canadiens in 2023-24, and that should also come with power-play time. Newhook could still push for a 40-point campaign, but his fantasy value will be driven almost exclusively by his offense. He represents a risky bet on draft day, particularly in leagues that typically value all-around production in the later rounds.

Newhook recently completed his first full NHL campaign. He served as a key bottom-six piece for an Avalanche team which went on to win the Stanley Cup. The 21-year-old finished the season with 13 goals and 33 points in 71 games. Newhook is almost certainly ready for a larger role, but it's difficult to see that happening this coming year considering how deep Colorado's roster is. He's a fringe pick in redraft fantasy formats, and a high-end asset in all dynasty/keeper leagues.

Newhook began last season with Boston College before deciding to leave school when the Eagles' year was complete. He began his pro journey with AHL Colorado (nine points in eight games) before seeing action in six games (three assists) with the Avalanche. Newhook is one of the very best prospects in the game today, but Colorado has the depth to bring him along slowly. He won't be forced to play a major role right away, and he'll likely begin this season centering the club's third line while seeing some second-unit power-play time. It's unlikely Newhook will provide redraft value, although he remains an elite selection in all dynasty leagues.
