Falls to Niemann in Korea
May 31, 2026
Gooch lost on the first playoff hole to Joaquin Niemann at LIV Golf Korea to finish the tournament solo second.
ANALYSIS
Gooch sat comfortably at the top of the leaderboard following a seven-under 63 in the second round, but he gained just one stroke the next day and entered Sunday tied with Niemann for first. Gooch and Niemann were neck-and-neck for most of the final round, with both players carding four birdies over the final eight holes. After dropping two shots, Gooch forced a playoff with a birdie on the 16th, but he was unable to match Niemann's birdie on the first playoff hole. Although he couldn't close things out in Korea, it was still the best finish of the season for Gooch, who sits ninth in the LIV Golf individual season standings. LIV Golf Andalucia is next week, where Gooch has won two of his three career titles on the breakaway tour (2023, 2025).

Gooch entered 2024 as arguably one of the hottest golfers in the LIV Golf League. He won the season-long Individual Championship in 2023 thanks to victories at LIV Golf Adelaide, Singapore and Andalucia. Unfortunately for Gooch, 2024 was a bit of a different story. While he finished 10th in the LIV Golf individual season standings, he failed to add to his trophy collection, with his T2 in Las Vegas marking his best outing of the year. Gooch was given a special exemption to play in the PGA Championship, and while he was able to make the cut, he finished T60 at Valhalla. Unless he elects to play on the Asian Tour, Gooch is unlikely to receive an invitation to any of the four majors in 2025 and will have to earn his way through qualification.
Gooch's only chance to play in a PGA Tour would be via qualifying for either Open. He chose not to do so last year.
Gooch will fall out of the top-50 and not qualify for the Masters, and he has not qualified for any of the other three.
Gooch put together a very similar season to what he did in 2019-20. He lost strokes again off the tee, but was top 70 on tour in all other areas. Gooch finished the season in the top 40 in scoring average. There's no reason to think the 29-year-old couldn't do it again in 2021-22.
Year 3 on the PGA Tour was Gooch's best last season, making 17-of-23 cuts and notching nine top-25 finishes. He ended up top-55 in both SG: Total and scoring average. The 28-year-old solid finish last season does provide some reason for optimism going into Year 4.
Gooch is a perfect example of why you shouldn't write-off anyone that didn't finish in the top-125 the previous season. As a rookie, Gooch finished 139th on the FedEx list, but he retains partial privileges by staying inside the top-150. He parlayed his limited amount of starts (16) into over $1 million in earnings and full privileges for the upcoming season. Gooch appears to have some potential and should be given consideration as a salary cap selection this season.
Gooch's rookie season on the PGA Tour came and went without a top-10 finish, but did include five top-25s as he earned just north of $650,000. He's got plenty of development to do as the 26-year-old was very average in iron play and putting and below average off the tee due to inaccuracy. Don't expect much to change from last season to this one, though there's a decent chance for him to notch his first PGA Tour top-10 at some point in 2018-19.
Gooch appeared to simply be going through the motions throughout a majority of the Web.com season as he placed top-five just once in his first 16 starts, but a runner-up finish at the Price Cutter Charity Championship in August preceded his first career victory at the News Sentinel Open. He earned over $170K during these two weeks alone, boosting him into position to become a rookie on the PGA Tour as he finished sixth on the Web.com's regular season money list. Gooch also made the cut at the 2017 U.S. Open, but a final-round 80 resulted in a second-to-last place finish among those who made the weekend.
