2026 Fantasy Outlook
If not for how Scottie Scheffler closed the 2025 season, McIlroy would have been the obvious choice for Player of the Year. He came out of the gates firing winning the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, then winning THE PLAYERS Championship for a second time and then finally completing the Career Grand Slam with that long awaited first win at The Masters. Not only was his Masters win historic, but it was also his first major championship of any kind since the 2014 PGA Championship. McIlroy had so many close calls in those 11 years and an abundance of scar tissue. Now at age 36 and having accomplished basically everything one can in the game of golf, the hope is that he is freed up to continue to run up his PGA Tour and major championship win totals that sit at 29 and 5, respectively. What maybe doesn't get talked about enough is the fact that 2025 was the best putting season of McIlroy's career, and if that continues into 2026 he is going to be racking up top finishes. Stalls to T7 at PGA Championship
McIlroy posted a four-under cumulative score at the PGA Championship to finish tied with Cameron Smith and Xander Schauffele for seventh.
ANALYSIS
McIlory put himself on the back foot with a four-over 74 in the first round but rebounded over the next two days with scores of 67-66. He was one of several players sitting at four-under and two strokes back of Alex Smalley heading into Sunday, and McIlroy started out nicely with a birdie on the par-4 second. However, the two-time Masters champion was unable to gain another shot the rest of the way, carding 14 pars, one birdie and one bogey over the final 16 holes. McIlroy's Sunday stall was largely due to his performance off the tee, as he connected on just four of 14 fairways in the final round, though he gained 2.3 strokes with his putter, which was ninth-best on the day. McIlroy finished the tournament second in driving distance, T6 in GIR, eighth in SG: Putting and 12th in SG: Off-the-Tee, though he ranked in the bottom half of the field in driving accuracy and SG: Approach and Around-the-Green. The next time McIlroy tees off will be at the next Signature Event, the Memorial Tournament, that starts June 4.

It was a good year by any measure with win wins at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and the Wells Fargo Championship in back-to-back starts, but it could have been a great year by McIlroy standards had a couple short putts gone in down the stretch at the U.S. Open. It's still a bit unfathomable that a player as great as McIlroy has not won a major since 2014, but here we are heading into 2025. The Northern Irishman was third in SG: Total in 2024 (+1.41), but significantly behind both Scottie Scheffler (+2.50) and Xander Schauffele (+1.94). You know he's going to be motivated to close that gap and prove why he still deserves to be the top player on the PGA Tour. To do that he will need to improve his iron play in which he ranked 55th in SG: Approach and 131st in GIR percentage, down from 8th and 79th in 2023, respectively.
