Loses lead in hearbreaking fashion
July 5, 2026
Kohles posted a three-under 68 in the final round of the John Deere Classic to finish tied with Lucas Glover and Lee Hodges for third and two strokes back of winner Chris Gotterup.
ANALYSIS
Glover and Hodges entered the final round tied for the clubhouse lead, but it was Kohles who surged to the top of the leaderboard thanks to his five-under front nine. He was sitting at 20-under entering the back but was unable to extend his lead, which allowed Gotterup to catch up to him at the top of the table. It looked like the duo were heading to a playoff, but Kohles' second shot on the par-4 18th hole missed to the left side of the green and trickled into the water. He was unable to chip the ball in for par, and he dropped down to a share of third after finishing the hole with a double bogey. It was a heartbreaking finish for Kohles, who was in a good spot to capture his maiden victory on the PGA Tour and his second win of the season, having won the BMW Charity Pro-Am on the Korn Ferry Tour in early June. Kohles is listed in the field for the ISCO Championship next week.

Kohles returned to the PGA Tour after losing his card in 2022 following a two-win season on the Korn Ferry Tour, and his year was highlighted by a runner-up finish at the Byron Nelson. His game is built around hitting a ton of fairways (third in driving accuracy), but he's held back by his short game where he lost over a half-stroke combined around the green and putting. Without some strong improvement in that area, Kohles' upside is limited, and he'll likely be battling to keep his card.
A pair of victories in April at the Astara Chile Classic and the HomeTown Lenders Championship guided Kohles to the No. 1 spot on the 2023 Korn Ferry Tour Points List by season's end, while he also notched four top-10s across his final five outings from the Magnit Championship to the KFT Championship. Earning a start in the FedExCup Fall's RSM Classic in November, Kohles gained 4.4 strokes with his irons en route to a T5 finish at Sea Island Golf Club, raking in just over $300K during his only appearance at the PGA Tour level throughout the 2022-23 campaign. He ranked eighth or better among his KFT peers in each of driving accuracy, GIR percentage and scrambling this past season, but a lack of power off the tee could be a primary weakness for this 170-pound, 33-year-old in 2024.
Kohles hasn't made a start on the PGA Tour since missing the cut at the 2017 U.S. Open, but he's regained status thanks to 17 top-25s and two runner-up performances throughout the 2020-21 super season on the Korn Ferry Tour. He closed the KFT campaign with back-to-back top-20s at the Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship and the Korn Ferry Tour Championship. From a season-long perspective, Kohles ranked second in GIR percentage and 10th in driving accuracy on the KFT.
Talk about feeling confident about your game: Kohles made headlines around the golfing world in July when he won right out of the gate in his Web.com Tour debut at the Nationwide Children's Hospital Invitational in a playoff, and then backed it up the very next week at the Cox Classic when he closed Sunday with a 62. In just 10 starts he amassed more than $300,000 in earnings and cemented his place in Web.com Tour history. Watch out for him being a John Huh-type, winning in his first year on tour, possibly in an opposite-field event to a World Golf Championship or The Open Championship. He's a bit of a risk as a rookie but should pay off in salary cap leagues. In draft leagues, he's worth a fifth-round pick.
