Declares for 2017 NFL Draft
January 3, 2017
Perine announced Tuesday that he will enter the 2017 NFL Draft, Ryan Aber of The Oklahoman reports.
ANALYSIS
On the heels of becoming Oklahoma's all-time leading rusher in Monday's Sugar Bowl win, Perine announced Tuesday that he'd forego his senior season and head to the NFL. Perine first made a name for himself in 2014 as a freshman when he broke the single-game rushing record by running for 427 yards on 34 carries against Kansas. He had a whopping 263 carries in his freshman season, but his workload became more reasonable over his last two seasons as Joe Mixon became more featured in the offense. Perine, 21, enters the league with 685 carries under his belt. While he's not a speedster, Perine is an extremely powerful back at 236 pounds and he's able to find the hole and accelerate through it without hesitation.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2016
2015
If not for the presence of fellow top talent runner Joe Mixon, Perine (5-10, 234) would likely make a push for the top 5. His first two years at Oklahoma have been incredibly productive, and he heads into his third season with 3,062 yards (6.3 YPC) and 37 rushing TDs in 26 games. His consistency suffered with Mixon around last year, though, as Perine failed to hit the 80-yard mark in six of last year's 13 games. In the event of a blowout – no small possibility given the dominance of the Oklahoma offense – Perine will be the first Sooner to get the day off.
Perine was incredible as a true freshman last year, but that could make him overvalued this season. Perine took 263 carries for 1,713 yards (6.5 YPC) and 21 touchdowns, including five touchdowns and an NCAA-record 427 yards against Kansas. But this season, Oklahoma likely will throw much more than it did last year after hiring former East Carolina offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley as the new playcaller. Compounding the problem is Oklahoma's wealth of running back talent, with backup Alex Ross a potential star and redshirt freshman Joe Mixon a top recruit from 2014. Between likely reduced carries and the crowded backfield, Perine might not approach last year's numbers, spectacular as he might be.
