2025 Tournament PreviewCoach Penny Hardaway struck gold in the transfer portal in 2024-25, picking up one of the country's best scorers in PJ Haggerty (21.2 ppg) from Tulsa, an elite big man in Dain Dainja (13.7 ppg, 7.0 rpg) from Illinois, an experienced point guard in Tyrese Hunter (14.1 ppg, 3.4 apg) from Texas and another double-digit scorer in Colby Rogers (10.7 ppg) from Wichita State, in addition to most of his bench. The collective result is an offense that ranks just 69th in KenPom's efficiency metric, but also one that can close gaps quickly with a top-10 three-point success rate (38.8 percent). The Tigers play fast (top-40 adj. tempo) but also commit a lot of turnovers (No. 308 in offensive turnover rate) and aren't great from the charity stripe (70.9 percent, No. 230). They did show early they can hang with anyone in the country, however, collecting an impressive set of wins over Michigan State, UConn, Clemson, Ole Miss and Missouri. Predictive metrics don't love Memphis after playing out of a weak American conference, but the eye test and early-season results say Hardaway has the firepower to win a few.
