Luke Kornet

Luke Kornet

29-Year-Old CenterC
Boston Celtics
2024 Fantasy Outlook
During Boston's championship season, Kornet averaged 15.6 minutes per game, a six-year high for the reserve center. Similar playing time is expected for the Green Kornet during the 2024-25 season, with the occasional DNP-Coach's Decision. Kornet could see additional minutes early in the season while Kristaps Porzingis recovers from foot surgery. Al Horford will start while the Unicorn is out, but Big Al is 38 years old and no longer plays the second match of back-to-backs. That means Kornet could get the occasional start if he can beat out fellow backup big man Xavier Tillman. Memphis traded Tillman to Boston last season at the deadline. Kornet averaged 16 minutes per game after the Tillman trade, so Tillman's presence doesn't really threaten Kornet's standard backup minutes. You may recall that early in Kornet's career he would hit roughly 1.5 threes per game. Well, those days are long gone. In fact, Kornet has attempted only 19 three-pointers over the past three seasons. The 29-year-old does produce standard reserve center stats over his brief appearances, with averages of 5.4 points, 4.1 boards and 1.0 blocks per contest last season. Similar production should be expected from Kornet this year unless the ageless Horford suffers a long-term injury, which would create more opportunities for Kornet and Tillman to shine. Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Luke Francis Kornet was born in Lexington, Kentucky in 1995 to Frank and Tracy Kornet. Before his junior year at Liberty Christian School, Kornet stood at 6-foot-3. After his senior season, he measured 6-foot-10. Kornet turned a solid final campaign into a commitment to play college ball at Vanderbilt and follow in his father's footsteps. He also participated in golf in high school and lists that as one of his favorite hobbies. You can follow Kornet on Twitter (@bigshin32) and Instagram (@luke_kornet). Kornet was a second-generation star for Vanderbilt. His father, Frank, played for the Commodores from 1985 to 1989 before becoming a second-round pick of the Milwaukee Bucks. At 7-foot-1, Kornet is taller than his father and worked his way up the depth chart in four years in Nashville. As a freshman, he started two games and appeared in 28 others on his way to averaging 4.0 points and 2.3 rebounds. He doubled his scoring averaging as a sophomore in which he provided 8.7 points and 3.4 rebounds. Kornet hit a career-high 40 percent of his three-pointers in his second season. He started 25 games as a junior and supplied a triple-double in a January win over Auburn with 11 points, 11 rebounds and 10 blocks. It was just the second triple-double in school history. The stretch center averaged 8.9 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.0 blocks to lead the SEC. Kornet started all 35 games a senior and took a major role in the Friar offense for new coach Bryce Drew. He scored 13.2 points and added 6.2 rebounds and 2.0 blocks. He had five double-doubles and helped the Commodores advance to the NCAA Tournament, where they lost to Northwestern in the first round.

December 16, 2024
Kornet registered seven points (1-3 FG, 5-8 FT), 11 rebounds, four assists and one block over 27 minutes during Sunday's 112-98 win over the Wizards.
ANALYSIS
With Al Horford getting the night off for rest and Kristaps Porzingis (heel) leaving early, Kornet saw extended run. That's likely to happen often this season, so fantasy managers should keep Kornet in mind as a streaming option the next time that Horford sits.

In 2023-24, the Green Kornet returns to Boston for his fourth season. Last year was his first full season with the Celtics, where he appeared in 69 games and averaged 11.7 minutes per contest. Kornet provides affordable depth to an expensive, star-studded lineup. The 7-foot-2 center sits third on the depth chart behind Al Horford and Kristaps Porzingis. That said, Horford is entering his age-38 season and the Unicorn has a long history of injuries. The departure of Grant Williams to Dallas could mean Kornet will have to pick up some slack as Boston attempts to load manage their big men. Unfortunately, the days of Kornet hoisting three-pointers appear to be over. Despite draining 144 triples over his first 133 games in the Association, Kornet attempted only 13 three-pointers last season. He did block a career-high 46 shots and grabbed a career-best 197 rebounds in 2022-23. Still, those numbers make him worthy of only the very deepest of fantasy rosters. Boston traded the team's emotional heartbeat in Marcus Smart to acquire Porzingis and improve their frontcourt situation. They clearly didn't feel comfortable with the possibility of the now 28-year-old Kornet playing major minutes.
Kornet will return to Boston for the upcoming season, playing as a backup center option behind Robert Williams and Al Horford. While he has flashed small amounts of upside throughout his career, his trajectory has been trending in the wrong direction since the 2018-19 season in which he ended as the 190th-ranked player. Since that time, he has failed to crack the top 300, a range that feels applicable once again this season.
Kornet saw his 2019-20 season cut short even before the COVID-19 pandemic paused play, as the third-year big man was beset by a serious left ankle sprain in late February. Prior to that development, Kornet averaged 6.0 points and 2.3 rebounds across 15.5 minutes over 36 games. Kornet struggled significantly as a shooter from in front of the arc during the 2018-19 campaign with an unsightly 41.1 percent success rate, but he bounced back last season to shoot a career-high 43.9 percent overall, including 64.6 percent from two-point range. Conversely, the 7-foot-1 Kornet had been a strong three-point shooter during his first pair of pro seasons before slumping to 28.7 percent shooting from distance in 2019-20, and he may have limited opportunities to bounce back in the coming campaign with Daniel Gafford and Cristiano Feliciano likely ahead of him on the depth chart behind Wendell Carter.
Kornet saw some minor improvement in his second NBA season with the Knicks last year, averaging 7.0 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.2 assists across 17.0 minutes per game. Due to injury, he ended up making just 46 appearances with New York, but 18 of those were starts. In those starts, Kornet's averages were boosted to 11.0 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 25.7 minutes per contest. Kornet is primarily a floor spacer on offense, as he shot an impressive 36.3 percent from behind the arc last season on 4.2 attempts per game. In Chicago, he may have a hard time coming across consistent playing time with the team likely looking to see everything it can out of its young frontcourt. With Wendell Carter and Lauri Markkanen locked in as starters, Kornet will likely be behind veteran Thaddeus Young and rookie Daniel Gafford in the rotation. However, despite having young careers, Carter and Markkanen already have their own injury histories, so Kornet does give the Bulls a fairly reliable reserve option should either miss time.
After going undrafted out of Vanderbilt, Kornet spent the 2017-18 campaign on a two-way deal with the Knicks. He saw action in just 20 games with New York at the NBA level, averaging 6.7 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.4 three-pointers across 16.4 minutes. However, he did dominate in 36 G-League games, finishing with 16.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.6 blocks and 2.5 three-pointers across 32.4 minutes. That strong play and solid offseason prompted the Knicks to bring him back on standard contract for the upcoming year. Kornet is expected to slot in as depth in the frontcourt, providing a floor-stretching big that can hit the deep ball. He could see some decent run early on in the season with Kristaps Porzingis (knee) expected to miss at least the first few months, though that doesn't mean he'll be a viable option in Fantasy leagues. The Knicks also brought in Noah Vonleh and Mitchell Robinson this offseason, who could push Kornet for minutes at the position.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
In line to see more minutes?
CBoston Celtics
August 17, 2024
Kornet could experience an uptick in minutes during the first half of the 2024-25 regular season due to the absence of Kristaps Porzingis, according to Brian Robb of MassLive.
ANALYSIS
Porzingis is rehabbing from foot surgery, and Al Horford will get a fair share of nights off to rest, meaning some of the backup bigs, including Kornet, could enjoy a bump in minutes for as long as Porzingis needs to recover. Kornet should handle most of the minutes at center in games for which Porzingis is out and Horford is resting. Kornet averaged 15.6 minutes over 63 regular-season games in 2023-24, which represents the second highest-mark of his career.
