2025 Fantasy Outlook
After a blockbuster mid-season trade sent Doncic to Los Angeles in exchange for Anthony Davis, the new-look Lakers took some time to find their groove. They eventually started to click and made it through the Play-In Tournament, but couldn't pull off an upset against the Timberwolves in the first round. Doncic's first action in Purple and Gold was limited, and the production was a bit strange. When comparing his regular-season action with the Mavericks (22 games) and Lakers (28) last season, Doncic had a lower field-goal percentage but a higher three-point percentage with his new team. He also had more free-throw attempts and shot a higher percentage from the charity stripe. However, he turned the ball over more. The overall production in 2024-25 was still gaudy in relation to the rest of the league, but it was a significant drop compared to his final full year in Dallas, when he averaged 33.9 points, 9.8 assists and 9.2 rebounds in 2023-24. Doncic, Austin Reaves and newcomers Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart are the core players under contract through the next two years, while LeBron James will be operating on an expiring deal after picking up his $52.6 million player option for 2025-26. The front office is clearly pushing all of their chips into the middle to fit Doncic's timeline, and he's expected to be the franchise's future, though James' presence likely caps Doncic's fantasy upside. Surprisingly, Doncic has finished inside the top five in eight-category leagues only once in his seven-year career, and last season was the first time he failed to crack the top 15 since his rookie campaign. Luka Doncic was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia, to Mirjam Poterbin and Sasha Doncic. His father played pro basketball in Slovenia while his godfather, Radoslav Nesterovic, played 12 seasons in the NBA and won a title with the San Antonio Spurs in 2005. Luka began playing basketball at age eight with the youth teams of Olimpija. He practiced often with Olimpija's under-14 team, but due to league rules, could not play with the squad. Instead, he played for the club's under-12 selection team. When he was only 13, Doncic signed a five-year contract with Real Madrid. He immediately began playing for the under-16 team, earning the MVP award during the under-16 Spain Championship. In the championship game, he scored 25 points in victory. The following year, Doncic moved up to Real Madrid's under-18 team and reserve team. He continued to shine, winning the MVP award at the under-18 Next Generation Tournament and claiming a championship. At 16 years, two months and two days of age, he made his professional debut, becoming the youngest player to ever play for Real Madrid. A little over three years later, Doncic became an NBA player when he was selected in the 2018 NBA Draft. He has shown an interest for charitable giving throughout his brief career, donating game-worn sneakers to raise money for meaningful causes on more than one occasion. Luka Doncic played three seasons for the EuroLeague's Real Madrid squad before joining the Mavericks in 2018. As a 16-year-old, he appeared in 51 EuroLeague and ACB games for Real Madrid, coming off the bench to average 4.3 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists in over 12 minutes per game during the 2015-16 season. During his second year with Real Madrid, Doncic started 26 of 77 EuroLeague and ACB games, helping the squad to a fourth-place EuroLeague finish. He led the team in scoring in four of 36 EuroLeague contests. Doncic's EuroLeague career peaked in 2017-18, a season in which he led Real Madrid to their 10th EuroLeague Championship. He averaged 16.0 points, 4.8 boards and 4.3 assists over 33 EuroLeague contests. After Real Madrid defeated Fenerbahce Dogus in the EuroLeague finals, Doncic was named both EuroLeague Final Four MVP and EuroLeague MVP. At 18, he was the youngest EuroLeague player to win the MVP award.

Doncic is still considered out indefinitely due to a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, and his status for the first round of the playoffs versus Houston remains in serious doubt. With Austin Reaves (oblique) also out indefinitely, the Lakers will have to lean more heavily on LeBron James, and Luke Kennard should continue to play a more prominent role in the backcourt as well.

The 25-year-old is coming off his first NBA Finals appearance, losing to the Celtics. Even in the regular season, Doncic had his best season to date, finishing third in MVP voting. He led the NBA with 33.9 points per game, doing so on efficient 49/38/79 percent shooting, even posting a 73-point performance against the Hawks. He also led the league in usage rate (36%) for the third time in four seasons. Close to averaging a triple-double, Doncic also racked up 9.8 assists, 9.2 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game. Few players have as safe of a floor as Doncic, and that shouldn't change in 2024-25. The team will look a bit different this season, with Klay Thompson added to the mix among a full season of trade-deadline acquisitions P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford. But nothing that Dallas has done in the offseason suggests Doncic will take any step back in production, and he's actually still young enough to make strides in his game. Ultimately, he's a clear first-round fantasy selection worthy of being selected in the top five of nearly every league.
From a fantasy perspective, Doncic's 2022-23 campaign was the best of his career, with the star playmaker ranking eighth in per-game value. He reached a career-high 32.4 points per game while also converting a career-high 49.6 percent of his shots from the field. His 1.4 steals were a career mark as well. Doncic made his fourth straight All-NBA First Team selection and finished eighth in MVP voting. Few players are as heliocentric as Doncic, whose 37.6 percent usage rate was just second behind Giannis Antetokounmpo. His 10 triple-doubles ranked third in the association. The addition of Kyrie Irving in the middle of last season didn't drastically affect Doncic's numbers. The team remains shallow, so Doncic will still need to play his heliocentric brand of basketball, even if Irving is there to carry a bit of the burden. At this point, free-throw percentage is arguably the biggest negative of his fantasy profile. He's never shot better than 75.8 percent from the stripe. Turnovers were an issue in the past, but he brought those down to 3.6 per game in 2022-23. All things considered, Doncic is a clear first-round pick in all formats.
Doncic entered last season firmly in the discussion among the top players to select in fantasy. He came through with another monster stat line, averaging 28.4 points, 9.1 rebounds, 8.7 assists, 1.2 steals and 3.1 three-pointers per game. He had a career-high 37.4 percent usage rate, which was also the highest mark in the NBA. If there was a downside, it's that his 45.7 percent shooting from the field and 74.4 percent shooting from the free-throw line are nothing to write home about. The Mavericks bolstered their frontcourt over the summer by adding Christian Wood and JaVale McGee, filling an area of significant need. However, they lost Jalen Brunson to the Knicks and didn't make any noteworthy additions at the guard spot, leaving Spencer Dinwiddie and Tim Hardaway Jr. as Doncic's top running mates. If he could improve his free-throw shooting percentage to around 80 percent, Doncic could be the top player in all of fantasy. Even if he doesn't, he's still a top target who should be gone by the end of the first round of all leagues. His floor is as high as anyone's, and his ceiling is a player who could average 30 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and 3.0 three-pointers.
Doncic signed a five-year, $207 million extension with the Mavericks in the offseason, coming off a 2020-21 campaign in which he averaged 27.7 points, 8.6 assists, 8.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals in 34.3 minutes. He also reached career-highs in field-goal percentage (47.9) and three-point percentage (35.0). That resulted in Doncic ranking 14th in fantasy production on a per-game basis -- a marginal dip from his 2019-20 rank of 10th. Most impressively was the 22-year-old stepping his game up in the playoffs against the Clippers and the elite wing defense of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. In the seven-game, first-round series, Doncic averaged 35.7 points on 49/41/53 shooting, 10.3 assists, 7.9 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 40.2 minutes. Doncic is the betting favorite for MVP heading into 2021-22, demonstrating how much of a phenom he already is. His usage should stay stagnant, as the Mavericks didn't make any impactful additions in terms of playmakers during the offseason, and arguably the only meaningful addition they made at all was Reggie Bullock -- a much-needed 3-and-D wing. Putting aside turnovers for the purposes of most fantasy leagues, the only significant hole to poke in Doncic's game is his poor free-throw percentage. He's a 73.5 percent career shooter in the NBA and was an 80.1 percent career shooter in Europe, so there's certainly room for improvement. Even if he doesn't make strides there, Doncic is still worth a first-round selection in almost all fantasy leagues due to his pure upside as a nightly 30-10-10 threat. He also may be the most valuable player in keeper/dynasty fantasy formats.
Doncic built upon his electric rookie campaign, improving his numbers essentially across the board. The sophomore 20-year-old averaged 28.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, 8.8 assists, 2.8 threes and 1.0 steals in 33.6 minutes during 2019-20. Doncic is in complete control of the Mavericks' offense, posting the second-highest usage rate in the league (36.8 percent), trailing only Giannis Antetokounmpo and just ahead of James Harden. What resulted was the 10th-best fantasy season on a per-game basis in eight-category leagues. Doncic's big performances were historic, including a game against the Bucks in the bubble where he recorded 36 points, 19 assists, 14 rebounds and a steal with just two turnovers -- one of his 17 triple-doubles. While it doesn't seem like there's much more for him to improve in terms of raw numbers, he's just 21 years old, so improvement is practically inevitable. For Doncic, that would probably take the form of better efficiency from three (31.6 percent) and the free-throw line (75.8). All things considered, Doncic is a no-brainer first-round fantasy selection who has the upside to crack the Top 5 if things break right.
The 2018-19 Rookie of the Year, Doncic had one of the best opening campaigns in NBA history. He became the first rookie ever to average at least 20 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 1 steal, and he did it as a 19-year-old. Not only did Doncic record an impressive 21.2 points per game, he did it in unique fashion for a young player, with the only other rookie ever to average at least 2 made threes and 4 made free-throws being Allen Iverson. The Mavericks are already comfortable handing Doncic the keys to the offense, and his all-around skillset makes him a valuable fantasy commodity. He ranked 11th in usage rate (30.5%) last season, and Doncic recorded eight games with at least 30 points, 22 games with at least 10 rebounds, 11 performances with 10-plus assists, and nine outings with greater than three steals. It's difficult to over-emphasize how NBA-ready Doncic looked as a teenager. Heading into his second season, fantasy owners will look for the 6-foot-7 playmaker to increase his efficiency, as he shot a less-than-ideal 42.7 percent from the field, 32.7 percent from deep and 71.3 percent from the charity stripe. If Doncic can bump those percentages up while making small statistical strides elsewhere, he has a strong shot at making the All-Star team in 2019-20 and being a top-tier fantasy asset.
Doncic entered the 2018 NBA Draft as one of the more hyped international players in recent memory. He picked up EuroLeague MVP honors in his fourth season with Real Madrid and finished the year with averages of 16.0 points, 4.9 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.1 steals across 33 games. He also hit 1.7 three-pointers per contest at a 32.9 percent clip. Doncic's production earned him a selection with the third overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft and he now heads to Dallas as another building block for the future. It seems likely that Doncic is thrust into big minutes right away and even though there may be some growing pains in terms of his fit alongside promising second-year guard Dennis Smith, his extended range at 6-foot-8 and versatility to make in impact at three different positions are all positives for his future Fantasy outlook. Doncic's numbers likely won't be overly gaudy in Year 1, but he'll enter the season as the best all-around Fantasy rookie, and he projects as a much more efficient scorer than the other guards in his draft class. Look for the rookie to be a coveted selection in dynasty leagues and he'll also be an intriguing late-round selection in standard drafts for those hoping Doncic makes a seamless transition to the NBA.
