Intends to sign extension
Shamet intends to sign a four-year, $24 million deal to return to the Knicks, Shams Charania of ESPN reports Monday.
ANALYSIS
Shamet played for five different teams before landing in New York and finding a long-term home. He played a minor role during his first season but worked his way into being a key contributor in 2025-26, culminating in a few memorable playoff moments for the NBA champions. While a feel-good story, Shamet's on-court production will be modest and sporadic when everyone is healthy. He averaged 9.3 points in 23.0 minutes per game across 51 regular-season appearances (12 starts) during the 2025-26 season.

Shamet was traded to Washington during the offseason, where he will play for his fourth team in the past five seasons. To this point in his career, Shamet has been utilized as a bench scoring option no matter where he has played, something that is likely to happen again in 2023-24. Across his five years in the league, he has averaged basically two three-pointers per contest. He should be able to flirt with those numbers once again this season, putting him firmly in the discussion as a potential streaming option.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Not enough cap room for return?
Shamet played a pivotal role in the Knicks' NBA Championship run, but he may not be back with New York for the upcoming season due to owner James Dolan's unwillingness to go into the second apron, Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reports.
ANALYSIS
"There are certain things in the NBA that you'd have to be suicidal to do. One of them is the second apron...I'll write as big of a check as possible, but I can't write a check that goes into the second apron," Dolan noted on an appearance on The Carton Show on June 17. Given Dolan's comments, it appears increasingly unlikely the Knicks will retain Shamet and Mitchell Robinson, especially given the interest both players should receive from teams in free agency.
