McLaughlin spent the first five seasons of his NBA career with the Timberwolves and was traded to the Kings in the offseason before the start of the 2024-25 campaign. He struggled to carve a role in Minnesota and was used merely as a bench player throughout his tenure, drawing just seven starts in five seasons and none since the 2021-22 season. That shouldn't be any different in 2024-25, as he'll add depth in the wings but shouldn't carve a steady role, especially after the Kings added DeMar DeRozan in the offseason. It's safe to say McLaughlin should be avoided across all formats by fantasy managers. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary
Jordan McLaughlin was born in Pasadena, California in 1996. The son of Thomas and Lisa McLaughlin, Jordan has three sisters. He emerged as a star in his junior year at Etiwanda High School in Rancho Cucamonga, California, averaging 15.6 points per game to help the Eagles to a 28-3 record. McLaughlin took his game to another level as a senior, averaging 17 points and 8.0 assists per game as Etiwanda went 27-5 and advanced to the CIF Southern Section Quarterfinals. In recognition of his achievements that season, McLaughlin was named the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin Player of the Year, San Bernardino Sun Player of the Year, Southern Section All-Open Division Team, Los Angeles Times All-Area Team and the Baseline League MVP. Even more impressively, he accomplished all that while sporting a GPA of 3.5 or higher throughout high school. McLaughlin chose to attend the University of Southern California, where he spent four years, majoring in sociology with a minor in communications. You can follow McLaughlin on Twitter and Instagram @Itsmclaughlin11. McLaughlin spent four years (2014-2018) at the University of Southern California, finishing near the top of the Pac-12 in assists per game in every season of his collegiate career. As a freshman, McLaughlin started 21 of the 22 games he played in, averaging 12.1 points and 4.5 assists per contest -- those numbers gave him a spot on the Pac-12 All-Freshman team. As a sophomore, McLaughlin started 34 games, averaging 13.4 points and 4.7 assists en route to garnering a Pac-12 All-Conference Honorable Mention. McLaughlin continued putting up consistent numbers in the 2016-17 season, averaging 12.9 points and 5.5 assists per game as a junior while picking up a second Pac-12 All-Conference Honorable Mention. J-Mac's senior season was his best. Starting the year on the Wooden Award preseason list, McLaughlin averaged 12.8 points, 7.8 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game. In recognition of his efforts, McLaughlin was named to the Pac-12 All-Conference Team and became the Pac-12 Conference All-Defensive Award winner. By the time McLaughlin graduated from USC in 2018, he'd played in 128 games, starting all but one and compiling 1,648 career points and 213 career steals. He went undrafted in the 2018 NBA Draft but signed with the Brooklyn Nets to participate in that year's NBA Summer League.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
2021
McLaughlin's production during the 2022-23 season basically mirrored what he had done the previous year, placing him outside the top 300 in standard leagues. He logged just 15.8 minutes per night, putting up averages of 3.7 points and 3.4 assists. Although he is perhaps technically the backup point guard behind Mike Conley, the Timberwolves acquired Shake Milton from Philadelphia during the offseason. Despite playing primarily off the ball during his time with the 76ers, Milton flashed some upside as a ballhandler last season. Throw in the fact that Nickeil Alexander-Walker took some steps forward last season, and you are left with a situation in which McLaughlin could struggle to see more than about 15 minutes once again.
McLaughlin saw his playing time dip for the second straight season, resulting in career-low marks of 3.8 points, 2.9 assists, 1.5 rebounds, 0.4 three-pointers and 0.9 steals over 62 games. His 31.8 percent mark from deep was also the worst of his three-year career, though he did raise his overall field-goal percentage slightly over the previous campaign to 44.0 percent. While his final numbers aren't impressive, they don't tell the entire story. McLaughlin dug himself out of a rough first half to become an important role player for Minnesota down the stretch -- over 21 games after the All-Star break, he shot 53.8 percent from the field, including 47.4 percent from deep, while averaging 3.2 assists and 1.3 steals across 18.4 minutes. The speedy point guard also posted a standout 4.7 AST/TO and frequently served as a leader and catalyst on Minnesota's second unit. That will likely be his role again in the coming campaign, though it may be hard for him to break 20 minutes per game while sharing backup duties with Jaylen Nowell, who is the superior shooter and scorer between the duo.
McLaughlin saw reserve point guard minutes for a second straight season last year, averaging 5.0 points, 3.8 assists, 2.1 rebounds and 1.0 steals in 18.4 minutes, though he benefited from the Wolves dealing with multiple backcourt absences. This season, he'll continue to battle for backup guard minutes with Patrick Beverley and Jaylen Nowell. As a result, McLaughlin should continue to see fewer than 20 minutes per game, making him mostly irrelevant in fantasy.

Rotation role could shrink
GMinnesota Timberwolves
February 7, 2024
McLaughlin received competition in the backcourt when Minnesota acquired Monte Morris from Detroit on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS McLaughlin is operating in the smallest role of his career, averaging just 2.5 shots per game, but he's connecting on 40.5 percent of 1.4 threes per game across 30 appearances thus far. Nonetheless, Morris adds superior size and multi-dimensional scoring to Minnesota's backcourt. McLaughlin has generated a minus-8.1 net rating per 100 possessions this season, which grades as the third-worst mark among all Timberwolves rotation players.
