2025 Fantasy Outlook
This summer, the Celtics drafted Gonzalez with the 28th overall pick. The 19-year-old spent the 2024-25 season with Real Madrid and had trouble receiving consistent playing time on what was a veteran-laden squad. The 6-foot-6 slashing Spaniard is an athletic wing with the potential to also play point guard. He's joining Boston at the right time. After multiple all-in seasons, the Celtics need to treat 2025-26 as a bridge season towards 2026-27 and the return of injured star Jayson Tatum (Achilles). That means they need to develop talent, escape the second apron and maintain roster flexibility. With the departure of both Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, plus the absence of Tatum, there are plenty of available minutes in Boston. If the C's are serious about their plans to develop Gonzalez, they would be wise to let him play more than the 10 minutes per contest he received with Real Madrid. Unfortunately, much of that playing time may occur with the Maine Celtics of the G League. We'll see. Read Past Outlooks
Exits rotation Wednesday
Gonzalez (coach's decision) went unused off the bench Wednesday in the Celtics' 147-129 win over the Heat.
ANALYSIS
The rookie first-round pick is averaging just 14.8 minutes per game, but he had been a consistent part of head coach Joe Mazzulla's rotation throughout the season until he fell out of the mix Wednesday. Mazzulla ended up going with Baylor Scheierman (18 minutes) and Jordan Walsh (five minutes) as the team's reserve options on the wing and at forward, resulting in Gonzalez being handed his first DNP-CD since Nov. 29. Gonzalez could eventually re-emerge as an option in the second unit, but he's unlikely to be in line for extended playing time if he reclaims a rotation spot.

Making mark in rookie season
In his March 26 column, Zach Kram of ESPN.com lists Hugo eighth in his NBA rookie rankings.
ANALYSIS
Gonzalez doesn't have the stat line of other standout rookies on Kram's list, which includes VJ Edgecombe, No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg and ROTY frontrunner Kon Knueppel. However, the Celtics have a plus-12.6 net rating when Gonzalez is on the floor, which is fourth among all players with at least 50 games this season behind Victor Wembanyama, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren. Gonzalez has given the Celtics plenty of energy off the bench and has thrived in spot starts, including March 2 against the Bucks, when he played 35 minutes and finished with 18 points, 16 rebounds, one assist, three steals and two blocks in a 108-81 win. Kram believes that Gonzalez's energy and defensive prowess should earn him a spot on one of the NBA All-Rookie teams.
