2026 Fantasy Outlook
Maxwell still hasn't solved the control problems that have plagued him throughout his career, but the 24-year-old has demonstrated his high-strikeout prowess at every stop, including his first taste of the majors with Cincinnati towards the end of 2025. The right-hander made eight low-leverage appearances for the Reds and struck out 13 over 10 innings. He also walked four and served up three home runs during this small sample. On the plus side, he threw more strikes with the Reds, as his 38.1 ball percentage was three points better than his 41.1 percent mark at Triple-A, though it still fell short of league average. Maxwell's arsenal includes a 99.6 mph average fastball, cutter and slider; all of which he'll need to command better as he gains more big-league experience. He'll have the opportunity this spring to secure a role in the Reds' Opening Day bullpen, but even if he doesn't break camp with the team, he should pitch more in the majors in 2026 than the minors. Nabs save in extras
Maxwell pitched a perfect inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 5-3 extra-innings win over the Padres.
Analysis
Maxwell's last outing was a four-run meltdown versus the Cardinals on Friday. He bounced back well this time, locking down his first career save in the 11th inning after Tejay Antone failed to do so in the 10th. Maxwell has a 13.50 ERA through six innings this season, but he's tossed three scoreless outings out of six appearances, offset by a pair of four-run disasters. He's not a candidate for high-leverage work under normal circumstances even as the Reds use a committee to handle closing duties until Emilio Pagan (hamstring) returns. Maxwell is the ninth pitcher to log a save for Cincinnati this season.

2025 Fantasy Outlook
Maxwell could be saving games for the Reds as early as this summer, but he'll need to improve his strike throwing to do so. A burly 6-foot-6, 293-pound righty who cuts an intimidating presence on the mound, Maxwell overpowers hitters with a 70-grade fastball that sits in the 99-100 mph range and touches 102 mph and a 70-grade slider that sits in the 87-89 mph range. He had a 3.89 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, 58:29 K:BB and five saves in 39.1 innings at Triple-A after excelling at Double-A to start the year. The lowest walk rate of his career was the 13.4 percent walk rate he logged at High-A in 2023, so Maxwell hasn't yet shown enough improvement in that area to generate confidence among saves speculators. If he can just find a way to keep his two dastardly pitches in and around the zone, he'll either be a great setup option or a high-strikeout closer. But if his control doesn't improve, he'll just be someone who tantalizes at times but never returns notable fantasy value.
