A miserable campaign by Opening Day closer Hansel Robles provided Buttrey the opportunity to seize ninth-inning duties last season, but the right-hander struggled himself and ultimately lost the role after blowing four of nine save chances. It was the second straight frustrating season for Buttrey, who looked like the team's closer of the future following a strong 2018 rookie showing but faded in the second half of 2019 before posting a career-worst 4.94 FIP last season. Though Buttrey's blazing fastball held steady at 96.1 mph, his strikeout rate dropped precipitously -- from 27.2% to 16.1% -- and his 8.4 SwStr% ranked among the bottom 10% of MLB relievers. That's a troubling number given that Buttrey gives up plenty of hard contact, and it doesn't fit the profile of a high-leverage bullpen option. He'll open 2021 out of the closer picture after the Angels acquired Raisel Iglesias from the Reds.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could close if Angels trade Robles
Buttrey could find himself stepping into save chances later this season if, as Mark Feinsand of MLB.com speculates, the Angels make Hansel Robles available at this year's trade deadline.
ANALYSIS
Buttrey has been a shutdown reliever in his own right, breezing through with a 2.57 ERA, 10.7 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9 while mostly working in setup duty. The Halos could opt to make him available in high-leverage spots for a role that doesn't tie him down to the ninth inning, but his skills make Buttrey the best speculative add in the Angels' bullpen.
