2026 Fantasy Outlook
The Josh Naylor for Cecconi trade worked out better than expected for Cleveland because they at least have something to show for the trade, while the Diamondbacks got back some prospects from Seattle when they sent Naylor north just before the trade deadline. Cecconi strained his oblique toward the end of spring training, which shelved him until mid-May, limiting him to 23 starts on the season. Cecconi picked up where he left off with Arizona after the trade with a servicable strikeout rate, a low walk rate but too many home runs. Cecconi has a 1.7 HR/9 through 236 major league innings, which has contributed to his 5.07 ERA in that time as well. Cleveland coaching got Cecconi to work on a sinker and cut back on his four-seamer, and perhaps that work will continue, as that four-seamer has led to 18 home runs and a .308 opponents' batting average. A pitcher has to have a fastball to succeed in the big leagues, but it would behoove Cecconi to avoid predictable fastball counts and leverage the rest of his diverse repertoire a bit more in 2026. Short start in no-decision
Cecconi took home a no-decision Wednesday against the Twins after tossing 3.2 innings. He gave up three runs on six hits and one walk while striking out four.
Analysis
Cecconi had six straight starts of five innings or more heading Wednesday, but an inefficient fourth inning during which he allowed four hits and a walk resulted in an early hook. The right-hander was quite effective in June with a 1.88 ERA over 28.2 innings, but he's started July on a rough note, giving up eight earned runs on 15 hits across 8.2 frames in his first two starts this month.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2021
Cecconi was recalled to the majors four times and optioned to the minors five times by the Diamondbacks in 2024. While the 25-year-old pitched well in a tough environment at Triple-A Reno, posting a 3.06 ERA and 54:14 K:BB over 47 innings, he wasn't nearly as successful with the big club as he split time between starting and long relief. Cecconi has collected a solid 24.1 percent strikeout rate and 6.8 percent walk rate in the minors, and while the good control has followed him to the majors (4.7 percent walk rate), the bat-missing has not (18.7 percent strikeout rate). The Guardians saw something to like with Cecconi and received him in the Josh Naylor trade over the offseason. Cleveland's reputation with pitching development is reason enough for fantasy managers to be more interested in Cecconi, although a spot in the Opening Day rotation does not appear to be a guarantee.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could rejoin MLB rotation
Zac Gallen suffered a hamstring strain Thursday against the Mets, per Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com, so Cecconi may have a chance to rejoin the Diamondbacks' rotation next week.
Analysis
Cecconi was demoted to Triple-A Reno last week after a five-start run with Arizona, which ended with him giving up six runs in three of his final four outings. The 24-year-old had a 2.08 ERA and 0.69 WHIP in his other three appearances, so he's been a true boom-or-bust performer early in 2024. Gallen remains without a return timeline for now but is a strong bet to land on the injured list.
