2026 Fantasy Outlook
The right-hander was selected by the White Sox during the 2024 Rule 5 Draft and was impressive as a rookie last season with a 3.81 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 145:58 K:BB over 146.1 innings. He earned a 7-8 record despite Chicago finishing last in the AL with just 60 wins, with a 4.01 xERA and 4.23 xFIP indicating that he may have deserved slightly worse results. His 23.9 percent strikeout rate and 9.4 percent walk rate were above average and poor, respectively. It was an impressive rookie campaign, but Smith could have his work cut out for him when it comes to avoiding a sophomore slump, especially with wins likely to be at a premium for the White Sox again in 2026. Sent to minors after sluggish start
The White Sox optioned Smith to Triple-A Charlotte on Wednesday.
Analysis
Smith was Chicago's Opening Day starter but finds himself back in the minors after putting up a 10.80 ERA, 2.52 WHIP and 11:9 K:BB over 8.1 innings in his first three starts. The right-hander should rejoin the Chicago rotation eventually, but he will try to get sorted out at Charlotte first. Jonathan Cannon had been on the same schedule as Smith at Charlotte and could be recalled to take the latter's spot in the big-league rotation Sunday in Kansas City.

2025 Fantasy Outlook
A sleeper in the Brewers' system who was poached by the White Sox with the first pick in the 2024 Rule 5 draft, Smith has a chance to be a viable rotation option for the White Sox as early as this season. He'll need to be kept on the big-league roster (or injured list) all season, otherwise the White Sox would have to return him to the Brewers. Smith, who has a 93-mph fastball and throws a pair of breaking balls, logged 94.1 innings across Double-A and Triple-A, with all his work as a starter (16 starts) coming at Double-A. He logged a 2.96 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 74 strikeouts in 67 innings as a starter, and also struck out 39 in 27.1 innings as a reliever. Smith may be eased into his big-league career as a low-leverage multi-inning reliever, but he could also get some starts in the first half.

Set for first All-Star nod
Smith has been selected to participate in the 2025 MLB All-Star Game.
Analysis
Smith is the first rookie pitcher in White Sox history to make the All-Star team. He's also the second player since at least 2000 to be named an All-Star the season immediately after being selected in the Rule 5 Draft, wit Dan Uggla the only other to accomplish the feat. In a season where the White Sox are once again among the worst teams in baseball, Smith's play has been a silver lining.
