Gets hit hard Thursday
PDetroit Tigers
May 28, 2026
Vanasco allowed four runs on four hits and two walks across two innings of relief in Thursday's 7-1 loss to the Angels. He struck out one.
Analysis
Making his first appearance since getting recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, Vanasco struggled mightily. The 27-year-old righty saw his ERA jump up to 15.63, and he's now been scored upon in each of his five outings for the Tigers so far this season. It's safe to say that Vanasco is off the fantasy radar at the moment, and he may be ticketed for a return trip to the minors in the near future due to his lack of effectiveness at the MLB level.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2020
Vanasco was selected as a high schooler in the 15th round of the 2017 draft and signed for him an over-slot bonus of $200,000. Across four stops in the lower minors, Vanasco has shown the ability to pile up strikeouts by punching out 116 batters across 83.1 innings. He did so with plus offerings in his fastball -- a pitch that could sit in the mid-90s and hit 99 at times -- and curveball. Unfortunately, that velocity caught up to him as he had to undergo Tommy John Surgery in September of 2020 and will miss the entirety of the 2021 campaign. He will be 23 when he is pitching without restrictions next offseason, at which point refining his changeup and improving his command will be paramount. Nothing about his upside has changed, but Vanasco will need to be added to the 40-man roster next offseason, which could expedite his path to the majors, and thus, enhance the risk that he eventually gets pigeonholed as a reliever.
At 6-foot-3, 180 pounds and armed with a low-90s fastball, Vanasco was a classic high-school projection lottery ticket when the Rangers selected him in the 15th round in 2017. Elbow inflammation limited him to 24.2 innings in 2018, but he broke out in a big way in 2019, and his fastball did exactly what Texas hoped -- it blossomed into a mid-to-upper-90s weapon that flummoxed short-season and Low-A hitters alike. He has an above-average curveball that flashes plus, but didn't use a changeup much before last year. It was obviously a fantastic statistical season for Vanasco, who gave up runs in only five of his 13 starts and struck out 88 in 59.1 innings, including the Sally League playoffs. Next up will be proving he can remain that dominant over a full season, ideally eclipsing the 100-inning mark for the first time. If his changeup and command continue to improve, he would profile as a No. 2 starter.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
May be called up
PDetroit Tigers
August 30, 2024
Vanasco could be called up by Detroit when MLB rosters expand Sunday since he's the only available pitcher on the 40-man roster, reports Evan Woodbery of MLive.com.
Analysis
The Tigers have three healthy pitchers on the 40-man roster currently at Triple-A Toledo, but both Bryan Sammons and Mason Englert were recently sent down and would need an IL move in order to be recalled so quickly. Vanasco was acquired from the Dodgers in late July in exchange for cash, and he's excelled for Toledo since the trade with a 1.38 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 15:7 K:BB across 13 innings.
