Sanmartin was utterly dreadful in four starts for the Reds last season. He put up a 19.85 ERA and 3.09 WHIP in those outings, with batters hitting .456 with a 1.294 OPS against the left-hander. Sanmartin was much better in relief, though, with a 2.96 ERA over 41 appearances while limiting them to a .694 OPS. The southpaw's drastic platoon splits (.717 OPS versus left-handed batters, .933 OPS against right-handers) also point to the bullpen being his long-term home. Sanmartin currently projects as the lone lefty in manager David Bell's relief corps, so he could find himself in high-leverage spots when the situation calls for it.
