Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
After posting a 125 wRC+ the previous season, the Guardians were counting on Gonzalez to add some pop to an otherwise punchless lineup. Unfortunately, Gonzalez was batting just .192/.213/.288 in early May when he was demoted to Triple-A Columbus. Gonzalez seemed to regain his confidence with a .288/.325/.494 line over 277 plate appearances with the Clippers, prompting a late July recall. The strong-armed outfielder bounced up and down a couple more times over the second half, playing mostly against southpaws. His .222/.250/.323 second half line was marginally better than his early numbers, but the season was still a huge disappointment. A closer look at the underlying numbers reveals Gonzalez's exit velocity, launch angle and HardHit% were nearly identical over 2022 and 2023, though he did fan more last season. Statcast's xBA and xSLG indicate Gonzalez was lucky in 2022 then snake bit last year. The Guardians waived him, but the Yankees claimed Gonzales who could see some work against lefties and as a defensive replacement. He's well off the mixed league radar and needs to return to 2022's contact level to be an AL-only option.
When Gonzalez is in the batter's box, he's interested in one thing: swinging the bat. His walk rates were routinely in the 3% range in the minors and his debut was no different as he walked at a 3.9% clip. That lack of patience is something opposing pitchers will be looking to exploit in the years to come. Gonzalez likes to go fishing but enjoyed quite a bit of success as a rookie, in particular after his return from an intercostal injury in August (.301/.333/.477, nine homers in his final 59 regular-season games). He's not a particularly good defender but does have a great arm, and Cleveland will need his bat in the lineup behind Jose Ramirez. Gonzalez puts the ball in play enough (19.6 K% as a rookie) despite the chase rate to think he should be able to hold his own as the league adjusts to him, but there may be an adjustment period in 2023.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could make roster
OFNew York Yankees  F
March 22, 2024
Chris Kirschner of The Athletic projects Gonzalez will make the Yankees' Opening Day roster.
Analysis
The 26-year-old was designated for assignment by the Yankees in January after being claimed from the Guardians earlier in the offseason, but he's made a strong push for a roster spot with a .945 OPS in 16 games during spring training. Even if Gonzalez does make the roster, he wouldn't have much job security as New York's No. 5 outfielder since Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, Alex Verdugo and Trent Grisham are locked in as the top four, and that's without factoring in Giancarlo Stanton.
