Cut from big-league camp
PNew York Mets  AAA
March 17, 2026
The Mets reassigned Burdi to minor-league camp Tuesday.
Analysis
Burdi made four appearances at the big-league level with Boston in 2025, but he was outrighted off the 40-man roster in August and then joined the Mets on a minor-league deal this offseason. The 33-year-old righty was given the chance to compete for a spot in the Mets' Opening Day bullpen during spring training, but he was cut after yielding two runs in two innings in his two Grapefruit League appearances. Expect Burdi to report to Triple-A Syracuse to begin the season.

Stat Review
How does Nick Burdi compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9
    Average walks per nine innings.
  • HR/9
Average home runs allowed per nine innings.
  • Fastball
    Average fastball velocity.
  • ERA
Earned run average. The average earned runs allowed per nine innings.
  • WHIP
Walks plus hits per inning pitched.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many balls in play against a pitcher go for hits.
  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).
  • Balls Hit 95+ MPH
The percentage of batted balls hit that met or exceeded the 95 MPH threshold.

2015
Stop me if you've heard this one before: Burdi showed promise in 2019 but ultimately spent most of the year injured. The righty lasted just 8.2 innings this time around before suffering a strained biceps tendon in late April. Shortly after resuming throwing in mid-June, he was shut down again, this time due to thoracic outlet syndrome, a problem which required surgery. His very small sample produced a comically misaligned ERA (9.35) and FIP (1.83). It's hard to take too much from less than a full game's worth of work, though his 42.5% strikeout rate was certainly encouraging. There's reason to believe Burdi could be a late-inning weapon if healthy this season, but there's unfortunately very little reason to believe he'll be healthy for an extended period. He's thrown a total of just 41 innings across all levels over the last four seasons and there's no sign of the trend changing any time soon.
Burdi made a strong impression in his professional debut in 2014 as he rose from rookie ball to Double-A in dominating fashion. He looked set to perhaps reach the majors in 2015, but surprisingly struggled at Double-A with a 5.63 ERA and 33:22 K:BB ratio in 30.1 innings. Back at High-A, he found his form and had a 2.25 ERA with a 13.1 K/9. He then finished the season with a 1.27 ERA and 16:10 K:BB in 14.1 innings back at Double-A. Despite the outstanding strikeout rates, wildness is a concern as he had a 6.6 BB/9 at Double-A. Burdi hits 100 mph on the radar gun and could be the high-velocity arm the Twins desperately need in the bullpen. However, he'll need to be more consistent and reduce his free passes to get a shot at the majors in 2016.
Burdi was on the radar to be drafted in 2011, but he slipped to the 24th round after struggling with inconsistency during his senior year of high school. At Louisville, he developed into an excellent power arm, showing a plus-plus fastball that touches 100 mph and regularly sits in the high-90s. He keeps hitters off balance with a plus slider than can reach the low-90s make him a potential closer down the road. Burdi made a strong impression in his professional debut with the Twins last summer. After dominating Low-A Cedar Rapids with a 4.15 ERA and 26:8 K:BB ratio in 13 innings, he then struck out 12 batters in 7.1 scoreless innings at Double-A New Britain. He's likely on the fast track to the big leagues, and might be in the Minnesota bullpen by summer.
