2026 Fantasy Outlook
The hard-throwing righty was once one of the game's premier pitching prospects but has come nowhere close to living up to that potential. Now 29 years old, he owns a 5.17 ERA and 1.45 WHIP across 156.2 career innings, most of which have come as as reliever. The Astros plan to give him a chance to start, and if they can somehow flip a switch to get him back to the guy he was prior to his big-league debut, he could be a possible deep sleeper. The much more likely outcome is that he winds up back in the bullpen, likely pitching in low-leverage. Read Past Outlooks
Earns first save of 2026
Pearson collected the save in Sunday's 8-5 win over the Cubs, issuing one walk in a scoreless ninth inning.
Analysis
Bryan King pitched out of the bullpen both Friday and Saturday and Bryan Abreu was deployed in the eighth inning of Sunday's game, so the Astros turned to Pearson to close things out. Pearson issued a walk to Pete Crow-Armstrong but got out of the inning unscathed after retiring the next three batters, needing 20 pitches (11 strikes) to get out of the frame. It was the first save of the season for Pearson and his first since the 2024 season. With King, Abreu and a soon-to-return Josh Hader (biceps) all ahead of him in the ninth-inning pecking order, Pearson is unlikely to see many more save opportunities this season.

Pearson has been on the scene for what seems like forever since being drafted in the first round of the 2017 draft. Yet, he has pitched just over 400 innings of professional baseball over that time due to multiple injuries, a pandemic and overall ineffectiveness. Pearson, through it all, can still bring the heat but often falls behind in counts and is forced to rely on that heat, which batters hunt with confidence. Pearson, when things are going right, is spinning breaking balls that are tough on hitters. The challenge has been that those moments were too infrequent, and the Jays decided to trade him to the Cubs near the deadline. The Cubs added a sinker to his pitch mix and helped him mechanically by allowing him to cut down on his walks, but the homers remain. Pearson has the fastball to work the late innings but lacks the rest of the skills necessary to be trusted in high-leverage situations with regularity. Reliever volatility is well-known, so anything is possible if his true talent level can ever be unlocked.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Hoping to start again
Pearson wants to consider returning to a starting role in 2025, reports Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca.
Analysis
The likes of Jordan Hicks, Reynaldo Lopez and Garrett Crochet have made the successful transition from the bullpen to the rotation this season, and Pearson hopes he'll be able to follow a similar path. The 27-year-old righty was one of Toronto's top prospects but has a rough injury history, which resulted in him being shifted to the bullpen the past two seasons. Pearson hasn't exactly excelled in relief this year with a 5.54 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 50:15 K:BB across 37.1 innings, but the encouraging news is he's been able to stay healthy after also doing so in 2023. Two straight healthy campaigns could be enough for the Blue Jays to consider stretching him back out as a starter.
