2026 Fantasy Outlook
Vasil became the first rookie pitcher since Chris Devenski in 2016 to pitch in at least 45 games while pitching at least 100 innings and post an ERA at or below 2.50. The Rule 5 pick of the Rays was dealt to the White Sox and the hard throwing sinkerballer got plenty of work in from the Chicago bullpen winning five games and saving four others while holding the league to a .204 average. Before you get all excited about his potential as a closer, understand that came along with a paltry 7.1% K-BB and a favorable .242 BABIP and 83% LOB%. Simply put, a lot went right for Vasil in 2025 and counting on that level of fortune in consecutive seasons is incredibly risky. Vasil throws six different pitch types, which helped him avoid the drumming so many Rule 5 pitchers take, and the organization could consider moving him back to the rotation as he was a starter throughout his time with the Mets before they left him exposed to the draft. The bigger risk is we rarely see relievers work consecutive seasons with this workload. In fact, just six active relievers have done so with the last being Tyler Holton with Detroit in 2023 and 2024. Officially lands on injured list
The White Sox placed Vasil (elbow) on the 15-day injured list Wednesday.
Analysis
Vasil required season-ending Tommy John surgery earlier this month. He will likely be shifted to the 60-day injured list eventually if/when the White Sox need the 40-man roster spot.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
Vasil couldn't break through as a starting pitcher the past couple seasons while working at Triple-A as a member of the Mets, most recently logging a 6.04 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 109:52 K:BB in 134 innings over 29 appearances for Triple-A Syracuse. The Phillies took him in the Rule 5 draft and then flipped him to the Rays for cash. Vasil will probably work as a lower-leverage reliever initially in the majors if he is not returned to the Mets. It will be worth tracking if the Rays can unlock something with the former prospect of note via a changed role and/or pitch mix.

Will compete for rotation role
Vasil is stretching out as a starter and will compete for a rotation spot this spring, he stated during an appearance on the Baseball isn't Boring Podcast.
Analysis
Vasil spent most of the 2025 season as a multi-inning reliever, but he made three starts and allowed eight earned runs across 11 innings in those outings. Vasil might be better suited to remain in a relief role, but the White Sox, a team that has nothing to lose in 2026 while continuing a rebuild, will give him a chance to show his starting chops during spring training.
