Analysis
Mercado made three appearances out of the Philadelphia bullpen in 2025, but a right shoulder injury prevented him from making any Grapefruit League appearances and will end his bid for an Opening Day roster spot. The Phillies haven't shed much light regarding where Mercado stands in his throwing program, making it unclear if he'll be ready for the start of the minor-league season.

The 25-year-old hasn't posted an ERA below 4.00 since rookie ball and wasn't considered a notable prospect when acquired by the Phillies in November, but he's put his best foot forward early in 2024. Mercado's 26:15 K:BB doesn't exactly match up with his elite run prevention this season, and some regression likely isn't far off. Still, the right-hander is already on the 40-man roster, so it's likely only a matter of time before he's called up for his MLB debut. The Phillies already have a sixth starter in Spencer Turnbull working out of the bullpen, so Mercado would likely be ticketed for long relief in the majors.
