2024 Fantasy Outlook
While it wasn't by design, the Red Sox and Dodgers switched designated hitters with Turner signing in Boston on a one-year contract, with a player option. The deal called for a bonus every 20 plate appearances between 480 and 560. Turner should have kept going in the negotiation as he finished with a career-high 626 trips to the dish, mostly at designated hitter, but he also played ample first base to qualify at the spot next season, as well as appearing at second and third base. Turner set a new personal best with 96 RBI while falling one short of tying his career mark in runs. Even so, Turner's 114 wRC+ was his lowest since 2013, his last season with the Mets. Turner declined his $13.4 million player option, so his role entering 2024 is unclear. He's avoided the IL for two of the past three seasons, but at 39-years-old, he can't be counted on for another full season. Even so, especially with first base eligibility, Turner can be a mixed league asset, just have a backup corner at the ready. Read Past Outlooks

How does Justin Turner compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.
* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Turner was on his way to avoiding the IL for the second straight season when he was felled by an abdominal strain just after the break. He played sparingly over the final two weeks after fouling a ball off his left shin. Turner continued to produce at an above-average clip in 2022, posting a 123 wRC+, but his .438 slugging percentage was his lowest since 2013. Turner maintained a high 43.4% fly ball rate, but he posted a low 7.7% HR/FB as his fly ball velocity dropped to its lowest level since 2018. Turner's strikeout and walk rates remained stellar, he's just lost some bat speed in his twilight years. Turner's defense is league average according to defensive runs saved, but his range is decreasing. That shouldn't be much of an immediate concern after he signed with the Red Sox, as he should see most of his time at designated hitter with Rafael Devers locked in at third base. Turner is still a mixed-league asset but be ready to pull the plug if his already waning power is slow to show itself.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Interest from Twins?
Turner could be a fit at first base for Minnesota, per Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
The Twins have a lot of plate appearances to fill at first base with Carlos Santana hitting free agency, and Turner would be an adequate replacement. He split the 2024 campaign between Toronto and Seattle and had a .259/.354/.383 slash line with 11 home runs in 139 games. He doesn't offer much power upside at this point in his career, but Turner would likely still provide some veteran stability toward the bottom of the lineup during 2025 in his age-40 campaign.
