Notches first save of season
PChicago White Sox
September 25, 2024
Anderson walked one and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday to record his first save of the season in a 3-2 win over the Angels.
ANALYSIS
The 31-year-old righty had five previous career saves, all of them coming with the Halos in 2018-19. Anderson hasn't exactly been sharp of late, posting a 4.15 ERA, 1.73 WHIP and 14:8 K:BB through 8.2 innings in September, but he misses bats with his fastball-slider combo and can be an effective high-leverage arm when he maintains a semblance of control. If the White Sox have any more late leads to protect over the final handful of games this season, Anderson could get the call again.

Stat Review
How does Justin Anderson compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9

  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2020
2019
Anderson is a tease to watch out of the bullpen. He has a live arm with a fastball that pushes into the upper 90s and a solid breaking ball. He has utilized that combination to strike out 28% of the major-league hitters he has faced over the past two seasons. He has also struggled to locate both pitches and has walked 16% of the hitters he has faced leading to a 4.75 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in just over 100 career innings. He simply cannot be used in high-leverage situations with that kind of walk rate. If he could find consistent command of his pitches, his career path could take off in a hurry as the expected stats were very much in his favor in 2019, but to date, he has been unable to get out of his own way.
Anderson spent the bulk of the 2017 season at the Double-A level, showing very little promise as he posted a 36:29 K:BB and a 5.06 ERA for Mobile. By May 14 of 2018, however, he'd picked up his first big-league save, and he'd go on to record three more for the Angels to go along with a 4.07 ERA in 55.1 innings. He throws hard but wasn't exactly dominant. To become a trustworthy high-leverage reliever, Anderson will have to make a considerable dent in his walk rate, which sat at an untenable 16.6% in his rookie campaign, second-worst among all pitchers who threw at least 50 innings. Control problems are unsurprising for a pitcher who throws his slider 55 percent of the time. Anderson's 27.8% strikeout rate is more good than great and isn't enough for him to overcome such a significant deficiency.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Likely to miss spring training
PLos Angeles Angels
February 13, 2020
Anderson, who injured his oblique muscle while playing catch, will miss 4-to-6 weeks with the injury.
ANALYSIS
The right-handed reliever's recovery timeline knocks him out for most, if not all, of the Angels' exhibition slate. Anderson was reportedly just a handful of throws away from finishing the session when he suffered the injury, which comes in the wake of an offseason during which he concentrated on core strengthening after struggling with trapezius muscle problems last season. Anderson logged 47 innings out of the bullpen in 2019, although he generated an unsightly 5.55 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in the process.
