2026 Fantasy Outlook
A big, athletic 6-foot-3 outfielder with plus speed and burgeoning power, Melton was dealt to the Rays from Houston this offseason in the three-team deal that sent Mike Burrows to the Astros. Melton has a fantasy-friendly game, although he could sit against lefties for most of his rookie season. He is an above-average defender in all three outfield spots, which greatly appealed to the Rays. Melton slashed .286/.389/.556 with six home runs and 12 steals in 150 plate appearances at Triple-A and made his big-league debut June 1, only to suffer a serious ankle sprain less than two weeks later that wiped out the rest of his June and most of his July. Melton shuttled back and forth between Triple-A and the majors a couple more times while compiling seven steals, a .157/.234/.186 slash line and 37.2 percent strikeout rate in 78 MLB plate appearances in 2025. His contact rate shrank from 80.8 percent at Triple-A to 66.4 percent in the majors, while his swinging-strike rate spiked from a career-best 8.2 percent to 15.3 percent. He may never hit for a sky high average and we should assume a platoon indefinitely, but Melton still has 20/30 upside in fantasy. Read Past Outlooks

Returns to Triple-A lineup
Melton (ankle) went 1-for-4 with a run scored Wednesday in his return to the Triple-A Durham lineup after being reinstated from the 7-day injured list Tuesday.

Melton was back in action at Durham for the first time since April 18 after a left ankle sprain kept him on the shelf for more than two months. Prior to being activated, Melton completed a five-game rehab assignment in the rookie-level Florida Complex League, where he went 6-for-11 with a home run, two stolen bases and three walks.

Melton may not be quite ready for primetime, but he'll likely get a shot as a regular in Houston's outfield sometime this season. Known best for his ability to play quality outfield defense in all three spots, Melton has good size (6-foot-3, 208 pounds) and is a plus runner with a chance to hit 20-plus home runs in a season, but his hit tool still needs refinement. He slashed .260/.314/.405 with five home runs, 11 steals, a 25 percent strikeout rate and a 6.8 percent walk rate in 47 games of Pacific Coast League action, which was well below league average (78 wRC+). On the season, he hit .253 with 15 home runs and 30 steals in 105 games split between Double-A and Triple-A. Melton's ability to steal 20-plus bases in a season is his main fantasy appeal in 2025, but he could develop into a more well-rounded fantasy outfielder in 2026 and 2027, and his defense should keep buying him opportunities amid early-career struggles.
