2026 Fantasy Outlook
Flaherty had an excellent 18-start stretch for the Tigers in 2024 before being traded to the Dodgers, so signing back with Detroit as a free agent last offseason seemed like a best-case scenario for his fantasy outlook. The results for the right-hander in his second stint with the Tigers in 2025 were mixed. Flaherty put up a nice 27.6 percent strikeout rate, but his walk rate jumped from 5.9 percent to 8.7 percent and his barrel rate rose from 7.7 percent to a career-high 10.3 percent. Luck was not on Flaherty's side, as he went just 8-15 on the playoff-bound Tigers, and his 4.64 ERA was nearly a full run worse than his 3.67 SIERA. Some positive ERA regression is likely, but with Flaherty's inconsistency from start-to-start and month-to-month, it's no guarantee. He'll return to the Tigers in 2026 after exercising a player option. Read Past Outlooks
Blanks Texas for second win
Flaherty (2-8) picked up the win in Saturday's 3-0 victory over the Rangers, scattering three hits over 5.2 scoreless innings. He struck out five without walking a batter.
Analysis
Texas didn't even get a runner into scoring position against Flaherty until a Josh Jung double in the sixth inning, which proved to be the last batter the right-hander would face. Flaherty held a 5.81 ERA at the end of May, but since then he's turned things around with a 1.90 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 28:7 K:BB in 23.2 innings over five starts, a stretch that was interrupted by a two-week stint on the IL due to an ankle injury. He'll look to keep rolling in his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home next weekend against the Phillies.

Flaherty had an interesting 2024 season after languishing in prior seasons attempting to recover what he last was in 2019 with the Cardinals. He may never get back to that level of success, but he came closer in 2024 than in any other season since his peak, even with the midseason change of employment. Flaherty came into the season working on his pitch shape and repertoire, and it showed in his success. The actual outcomes of his four-seamers in 2024 (.245 BA) matched the expected outcomes the pitch failed to realize in 2023 (.247 xBA), but the slider is where the success story truly lies. Flaherty had both a cutter and slider in 2023, and neither was an effective pitch by actual nor expected results. Flaherty scrapped the cutter and worked on the slider, and the work paid off. The league average against the pitch dropped from .339 to .222, while the pitch's whiff rate jumped from 26.5 to 36.3 percent. The postseason version of Flaherty reminds us of his inconsistent track record, and the last time he worked this much in a season, the subsequent season was disastrous. The 2024 season was a much-needed career recovery for Flaherty, but the path forward is anything but certain given his track record.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Undecided on future
Flaherty is undecided on whether to return to Detroit for the 2026 season, according to Evan Woodbery of MLive.com, who said that "it would be a surprise" to see Flaherty pick up his player option for the upcoming campaign.
Analysis
Flaherty signed a two-year, $35 million contract with the Tigers before the start of the 2025 season, but he increased that guarantee by reaching the 15-start threshold and escalating his 2026 player option from $10 million to $20 million. If Flaherty feels he can get more than $20 million in the open market, he could reject the option and enter free agency for a third consecutive offseason. Flaherty had a 4.64 ERA across 161 innings in the 2025 regular season for Detroit.
