2026 Fantasy Outlook
Wesneski was dealt from the Cubs to his hometown Astros last offseason in the deal that sent Kyle Tucker to Chicago. The 28-year-old cracked the Opening Day rotation and had some bright spots early on, going seven innings in his second start and striking out a career-high 10 batters in his third outing. It was short-lived, however, as Wesneski required Tommy John surgery in late May. The operation will likely keep him sidelined at least until the second half of the 2026 season, and odds are he won't be closer to his pre-surgery form until 2027. Wesneski has teased fantasy managers at times but has had more success as a reliever (3.56 ERA, 26.4 percent strikeout rate) than a starter (4.28 ERA, 21 percent strikeout rate) and has had platoon issues (.327 wOBA versus lefties). Once he's healthy, the Astros could give him another chance to start. Read Past Outlooks
Placed on 15-day injured list
The Astros placed Wesneski (elbow) on the 15-day injured list Wednesday.
Analysis
Wesneski still has lots of rehabbing to do following last May's Tommy John surgery. He could eventually shift to the 60-day IL when/if Houston needs the 40-man roster spot.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
Through his first few seasons in the majors, Wesneski looks more comfortable as a reliever than a starter. The righty has a 3.56 ERA across 81 career innings in relief, compared to a 4.21 ERA when starting. Wesneski also has a higher career K/9 and lower batting average against as a reliever, with his stuff seemingly playing up in shorter spurts. That said, the Astros may be inclined to give Wesneski one last shot as a starter after acquiring him in the Kyle Tucker trade. The 26-year-old is at least capable of covering multiple innings out of the bullpen, and he could snag some wins if he were to end up in relief, though long relievers are hard to count on for consistent fantasy value. If Wesneski is able to slide into the rotation for Houston, his outlook would improve.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could be dealt to Houston
The Astros are close to acquiring Wesneski, Isaac Paredes and Cam Smith from the Cubs in exchange for Kyle Tucker, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
Analysis
Wesneski, who is a Houston native, split time between starting and relieving for the Cubs in 2024, collecting a 3.86 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 67:21 K:BB over 67.2 innings. The 27-year-old would likely be stretched out in spring training, although his ultimate role in 2025 could depend on what else the Astros do this offseason and how healthy the likes of Lance McCullers, recovering from forearm trouble, and Luis Garcia, who underwent Tommy John surgery in May 2023, are to begin the campaign.
